The third OpenNebula Conference, taking place from 20 to 22 of October in Barcelona, is set to bring together top experts in designing, building and managing open clouds. The OpenNebula Conference is the place to share knowledge and practical insight and to learn about how advances in cloud technology are helping IT managers and executives tackle their computational and business challenges.
OpenNebula is the open-source platform of choice in the converged data centre, providing a simple, albeit flexible and powerful, cloud manager that supports traditional IT features and the dynamic provisioning of modern enterprise cloud. With thousands of deployments, OpenNebula has a very wide user base that includes leading companies in banking, technology, telecom and hosting, and research. OpenNebula is completely vendor-neutral and without hype, with a strong focus on real-life needs, developing the best technology, and serving users. There is only one completely free, fully open source, OpenNebula software…

One of the more challenging aspects of being a solution provider in the age of the cloud is that the number of vendors that a solution provider can have on their line card could theoretically be infinite. The only really limiting factor is access to the level of support required to properly represent any given cloud application or service.
With that particular issue in mind, PlumChoice has created a network of independent IT support specialists that solution providers can tap into to provide support for cloud applications. Dave Hauser, director of channel development for PlumChoice, said the cloud is an area that PlumChoice has made one of its primary support focuses because many of the solution providers that operate in the cloud are using business models that depend heavily on contract labor to provide support for their customers…

Compliance doesn’t need to slow down cloud adoption, but it should remain a high priority in cloud-enabled IT environments. Federal and state laws that protect information security and data privacy differ widely and are becoming increasingly complex. The global picture is even more difficult to unravel.
As enterprises around the world adopt cloud computing strategies, regulated data — such as personally identifiable information, health records and credit card numbers — increasingly passes through the control of a wide range of service providers. Multinational corporations must take time to understand the data security ramifications of cloud computing decisions and move forward in a manner that maintains compliance with applicable security and privacy regulations…

The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego, has made significant upgrades to its cloud-based storage system to include a new range of computing services designed to support science-based researchers, especially those with large data requirements that preclude commercial cloud use, or who require collaboration with cloud engineers for building cloud-based services.
The upgrades to SDSC Cloud, which debuted in late 2011 as one of the first large-scale academic deployments of cloud storage in the world, offers a unique storage service to educational and industry partners. The object-based storage system provides a highly scalable solution with flexible access methods and enhanced durability, while providing exceptional performance using high-speed 10 gigabit (Gb) connectivity at a fraction of the costs of other service providers…

Creating a hybrid cloud computing environment – one that relies on a mix of on-premises and public cloud services – holds out the promise of greater flexibility for federal agencies on where to run diverse workloads and applications. It also promises greater computing economies. But enforcing policies and security controls between and among multiple clouds can be tricky business.
Agency managers can encounter a myriad of challenges as they use multiple cloud providers in conjunction with their own internal private cloud infrastructure. Issues surrounding compliance, data flow and protection, security, and visibility of information can complicate even the most basic expansion moves, including how to divide up data workloads…

While public cloud adoption continues to grow in the enterprise, some markets — such as life sciences, academia and HPC — crave a different kind of cloud. And that’s exactly what Orran Krieger, research professor and director of the cloud computing initiative at Boston University’s Hariri Institute, wants to create.
Alongside other members of the academic community and the state of Massachusetts, Krieger is launching the Massachusetts Open Cloud (MOC), a new flavor of public cloud based on an open and customizable model Krieger says contrasts sharply with the leading public cloud platforms today…
