Cloud drives freedom, control

By David

Grazed from ITWeb. Author: Admire Moyo.

Cloud computing gives organisations the freedom to control their own destinies. That was the word from Andy Jassy, senior VP at Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Amazon Infrastructure, speaking during a keynote address at the AWS re:Invent Conference taking place in Las Vegas. There are about 19 000 delegates attending the event.

AWS, a collection of remote computing services, also called Web services, make up a cloud computing platform offered by Amazon.com. The most central and well-known of these services arguably include Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud and Amazon S3. Amazon markets these products as a service to provide large computing capacity more quickly and cheaply than a client company building a physical server farm…

Amazon on cloud nine: AWS is now a $7.3 billion business

By David

Grazed from FirstPost. Author: Editorial Staff.

Amazon’s cloud computing business Amazon Web Services kicked off its ‘Re:Invent’ conference with some statistics to show how the company’s shines above all others in the over-crowded cloud market. Ever since Amazon for the first time broke out financial details of its secretive cloud computing unit in April, we’ve known that AWS is "on track" to report $7 billion in revenue this year.

However, at the company’s Re:Invent conference, AWS’ senior vice president Andy Jassy said that AWS is currently running with an annual revenue run rate of $7.3 billion including $1 billion from its database service alone. He said the cloud unit has now over 1 million enterprise customers on the AWS platform; and that AWS is the "fastest growing enterprise technology company."…

Fusion Acquires RootAxcess to Expand Cloud Computing Segment

By David

Grazed from TheWhir. Author: Nicole Henderson.

Cloud services provider Fusion has acquired the assets of Chicago-based RootAxcess, a provider of IaaS, cloud storage, backup and recovery, and other cloud solutions as part of its near-term objective of growth through acquisitions. RootAxcess is expected to be fully integrated into Fusion by the end of Q1 2016.

According to the Monday announcement, the acquisition will help accelerate Fusion’s expansion in the cloud computing segment of its business, and strengthen its presence in the IaaS market specifically. A recent report by Synergy Research Group found that public cloud now generates more than $20 billion in quarterly revenue for IT companies…

Benefits of Cloud Consultants

By David

Grazed from Business2Community.  Author: Annie Bustos.

A cloud consultant can guide an organization through every step of cloud implementation. This includes an overall review of the business to identify areas where cloud will have the most value. The consultant can identify any gaps the company has that might prevent smooth integration, and suggest cost-effective strategies to fix those gaps.

And cloud storage and services continue to fall in cost, especially when compared to traditional in-house setups.  A well-planned cloud consulting strategy developed by an experienced consultancy can help a business in several areas:…

Cloud Computing: The Ethics of Big Data

By David

Grazed from Tech.Co.  Author: Alex Espenson.

Big data generally refers to information that is either unstructured or multi-structured. Unstructured is information that is not easily interpreted or organized and it has to be micro-analyzed in order to turn that data into value for businesses and government. It can refer to content heavy websites and databases as well as metadata.

Multi-structured data can be derived from individual interactions between people across a diverse range of websites and handles such as social media, chats, comments on websites, direct human interaction with the internet and smart city data statistics. The multi-structured avenues continue to expand and evolve as internet technologies emerge and adapt keeping up with the current and foreseeable economy…

Cloud computing: A data-centric business model

By David

Grazed from TechPageOne.  Author: Kevin L. Jackson.

According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology:  “Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management.”

While this definition is broadly accepted and has, in fact, been my adopted standard for years, it only describes technical aspects of cloud computing.  The amalgamation of technologies used to deliver cloud services is not even half the story…

Open hybrid clouds: A new approach to cloud computing

By David

Grazed from C4ISRNET.  Author: Adam Stone.

In recent years, cloud computing has delivered information technology managers a means to streamline their practices and reduce operating costs. Now, a new range of tools has emerged to help IT make the most of cloud’s potential.  Hybridization has opened new doors, as has the promise of open-source development. Taken together, the open hybrid cloud raises the bar for military cloud users.

“Open hybrid cloud puts the control in the customer’s hands, by avoiding supplier lock-in,” said David Egts, chief technologist of Red Hat U.S. Public Sector. Providers “have to step up their game; they can’t just sit back and cash a check knowing they are the only game in town.”…

Tapping into a Tech Support Network in the Cloud

By David

Grazed from TalkinCloud. Author: Mike Vizard.

One of the more challenging aspects of being a solution provider in the age of the cloud is that the number of vendors that a solution provider can have on their line card could theoretically be infinite. The only really limiting factor is access to the level of support required to properly represent any given cloud application or service.

With that particular issue in mind, PlumChoice has created a network of independent IT support specialists that solution providers can tap into to provide support for cloud applications. Dave Hauser, director of channel development for PlumChoice, said the cloud is an area that PlumChoice has made one of its primary support focuses because many of the solution providers that operate in the cloud are using business models that depend heavily on contract labor to provide support for their customers…

The ups and downs of cloud compliance

By David

Grazed from TechTarget. Author: Mike Chapelle.

Compliance doesn’t need to slow down cloud adoption, but it should remain a high priority in cloud-enabled IT environments. Federal and state laws that protect information security and data privacy differ widely and are becoming increasingly complex. The global picture is even more difficult to unravel.

As enterprises around the world adopt cloud computing strategies, regulated data — such as personally identifiable information, health records and credit card numbers — increasingly passes through the control of a wide range of service providers. Multinational corporations must take time to understand the data security ramifications of cloud computing decisions and move forward in a manner that maintains compliance with applicable security and privacy regulations…
