Collaboration Is a Snap

Thanks to cloud technology, collaboration with people from all over the globe is easier than ever. Adobe is a world leader in imaging software, with photographers and designers using its products. The more professional ones, with deep pockets, use Photoshop. The hobbyists opt for Lightroom — a standalone program you can buy for your computer and then use. But, like all other software companies, Adobe too is interested in cloud computing.

It doesn’t want people to buy its software. It wants them to subscribe to it, which is a more lucrative business. The subscription means a steady sum of revenue every month. Also, the entry cost is low. The Adobe Creative Cloud (CC) — that gives users both Photoshop and Lightroom — costs around Rs 500 per month in India. Almost all software worth their salt are moving to the subscription model. They call it SaaS — software as a service…

Cloud computing deals any subscription-based or pay-per-use service that, in real time over the Internet, extends IT’s existing capabilities. Cloud computing technology provides on-the-fly, point-and-click customization and report propagation for business users, so IT doesn’t spend half its time making minor changes and running reports.

Cloud computing technology is tripping a huge change in application development circles. As a metaphor for the Cyberspaces, “the cloud” is a everyday cliche, but when combined with “computing,” the meaning gets large and furrier. Today, for the most part, IT must jade into cloud-based services individually, but cloud figuring aggregators and integrators are already emerging…

Jeff Bezos of Amazon, along with a couple of his rivals, may eventually control much of the $1 trillion global market for business computers and software. That is because Amazon Web Services, his big-business computing division, is starting to affect more than just the world of computer servers, data storage and networking at the core of computing. Increasingly, it is also entangled with mobile phones, sensors and all sorts of other devices in the so-called Internet of Things.

It’s the same story at Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform, the other two big cloud companies. Start-ups and giant corporations rent the core resources, along with related software, instead of owning and running their own machines. What’s next? As innovations like artificial intelligence and connected devices become popular, customers are putting cloud components in mobile computing, home games and email marketing campaigns. In other words, the big clouds aim to be everywhere…

The American healthcare system is moving forward. Thanks to the HITECH Act of 2009, physicians and hospitals are encouraged with $19 billion dollars in spending to convert their old paper charts to new Electronic Health Records (EHR). Medical records and physician charts are essential for the smooth operation and delivery of optimal and continuous healthcare. These records must be available to the doctor or nurse at all times and should be easy to access when needed.

The thought of spending time and money to overhaul a fully-immersed and often entirely adequate paper system can be overwhelming to small medical practices. Smaller practices do not usually have the technological resources to keep up with new standards of protected health information (PHI) storage and delivery…

Business continuity is a vital aspect of consistent, reliable business operations. Many industries live and die by the uptime on their information technology resources. Banks and financial institutions rely on complex computer systems to execute and track orders, and those in the medical industry are required to keep meticulous records for compliance with record retention standards, just to name two examples.

Natural disasters can pose a threat to any industry that uses technology. As such, every industry should utilize data protection solutions and have an effective disaster recovery plan in place. Data protection solutions and disaster recovery plans should be aimed towards addressing hazards presented by natural and manmade disasters that are both large and small in scale…

The widespread adoption of enterprise cloud services represents a double-edged sword: While this new generation of cloud platforms and solutions brings with it a wide range of business value, it also introduces significant complexity. This reality has led directly to the growing profile of DevOps within organizations as more hours are devoted to maintenance, monitoring and operations.

In fact, a recent Intel data center survey, "The State of Enterprise Cloud Services," found that DevOps teams are spending the majority of their time on these lower-value activities. "Most enterprises are not leveraging sophisticated tools currently available that would decrease these hours by at least 50 percent and instead require a team’s valuable resources to spend their time performing manual, tedious, time-intensive work," said Jeff Klaus, general manager of data center solutions for Intel…

Public cloud computing costs more than do-it-yourself datacenters. Except when it doesn’t. On a per-VM basis, standing up public cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) instances for 24×7 use is egregiously expensive per VM, but the floor cost can’t be beat. If I want to stand up a workable small business network, I need several infrastructure components.

I need, at a minimum, a DNS server, a DHCP server, storage and something to run workloads. If I’m planning to expand my business at all before the refresh on that hardware is up, then I’m probably going to want to use virtualization, as it’s still the only rational way to spin up and down workloads as needed for on-premises deployments…
