The internet of things is real, and it’s a real part of the cloud. A key challenge is how you can get data processed from so many devices. Cisco Systems predicts that cloud traffic is likely to rise nearly fourfold by 2020, increasing 3.9 zettabytes (ZB) per year in 2015 (the latest full year for which data is available) to 14.1ZB per year by 2020.
As a result, we could have the cloud computing perfect storm from the growth of IoT. After all, IoT is about processing device-generated data that is meaningful, and cloud computing is about using data from centralized computing and storage. Growth rates of both can easily become unmanageable. So what do we do? The answer is something called “edge computing.”…

It used to be that every IT technology project needed to be a business — to have a business justification. Now, every new business project "needs to be a technology," noted Mark Tonsetic, analyst with the CEB unit of Gartner. "Digital is the new battleground" in the evolution of the modern enterprise, he said, and even the CEO wants a story to tell Wall Street about how his company is going digital. For optimists, that means new revenue opportunities and short time to market for new products. For pessimists, it means the company may not stave off disruption but at least it’s making a move to avoid it.
Tonsectic described how CIOs and IT directors might navigate these newly choppy and hazardous waters in a session at Interop ITX on May 19, How The Cloud Is Changing IT Investment Plans. The goal isn’t to make just the right investment in cloud. It’s to fit cloud into an IT ecosystem that has all the right components needed by the transforming company, he said…
Although navigation and responsiveness are certainly important, overall the eye will initially judge based on design before anything else. Thus, if you want to impress a visitor, the key lies in the graphic presentation of the site or app. With that said, here are four little things you can do to boost the visual edge on your web pages and app interfaces:

If data center consolidation across the federal government was a classroom group project, a few bright students would be doing all the work. According to a new report from the Government Accountability Office, four agencies—the departments of Commerce, Defense, Homeland Security and Treasury—have accounted for $2 billion of the government’s $2.3 billion in consolidation savings since 2012.
Another four agencies—Defense and Treasury (again), and the Interior and Agriculture departments—have closed 84 percent of the 4,388 shuttered data centers so far. These agencies get high marks, according to GAO data, while most of the rest of the CFO Act agency class essentially get an "incomplete" grade because they aren’t meeting or haven’t bothered to complete strategic plans mandated by the Data Center Optimization Initiative…

Just about every new piece of technology is considered disruptive to the extent that they are expected to replace older technologies. Sometimes as with the cloud, old technology is simply re-branded to make it more appealing to customers and thereby to create the illusion of a new market. Let’s remember that cloud computing had previously existed in one shape or form. At one stage it was called on-demand computing, and then it became ‘application service provision’.
Now there is edge computing, which some people are also calling fog computing and which some industry commentators feel is going to replace the cloud as an entity. Yet the question has to be: Will it really? The same viewpoint was given when television was invented. Its invention was meant to be the death of radio. Yet people still tune into radio stations by their thousands each and every day of every year…

Microsoft India, as part of the software giant’s ‘Public cloud for good’ initiative, is making public cloud platform Microsoft Azure broadly available to eligible non-profit organisations, bringing the power of technology to them. Qualifying non-profits can avail free Azure credits worth $5,000 for a year to unlock benefits such as insight, agility and operational efficiency.
Globally, Microsoft is donating $1 billion in cloud computing resources between 2016 and 2018 to 70,000 non-profits and NGOs worldwide, including in India, the company said in a statement. To drive greater inclusion, Microsoft India partnered with NASSCOM Foundation to organise an Azure for Good workshop in Hyderabad on Friday…

The future of cloud computing lies in speed. New technologies – and new iterations of existing technologies – are designed to allow web applications and services to perform better under heavy load. How can these technologies benefit cloud-based apps in general?

The FOSS acronym – standing for free, open source software – has been a clarion call for many since the open source movement started, despite being nominally based on a misinterpretation of what open source is all about. A group of people got together in 1998 to examine the “free software” market, out of concern that the concept was being hijacked and perverted in political and moral terms, prompting a push to create a more commercially oriented definition of what it has to offer.
This community also sought to reinforce the fact that the source code belongs to someone, and is their intellectual property. The key driver for using open source code is to avoid paying money to proprietary software suppliers, such as Microsoft and Oracle, with the FOSS community on hand to provide a high level of support in response to any problems that crop up…
