Hewlett-Packard’s boss has a plan. Or at least a vision for the long-struggling company. On Thursday, H.P. turned in better-than-expected quarterly earnings, sending the stock to levels just below the eve of its 2011 collapse, an event that led to the appointment of Meg Whitman as chief executive. Revenue was $28.2 billion, a drop of just 1 percent from a year ago, while net earnings were $1.4 billion, a rise of 16 percent.

The market could be saying that H.P. has returned to the status quo. That is, if there was a status quo to which an enterprise technology company could return. Since Ms. Whitman’s arrival, personal computer sales have shriveled, while mobile phones and tablets are on the rise. Cloud computing became a major force, changing both the demand for computer servers and the way software gets written…

Most users of online file sharing (OFS) services are extremely interested in hybrid solutions, according to a new survey from the Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG). Cloud-based file sync and share service Egnyte said those results are reflected in its own customers’ deployment preferences.

According to the study, more than two-thirds of current users of cloud-based OFS services say they are extremely interested in hybrid solutions, citing flexibility and control over data as the top factor driving interest. Egnyte’s data revealed similar results, with 7 out of 10 Egnyte customers moving to its hybrid model within the first 90 days of deployment. And more than two-thirds of all customer inquiries and pilots call for hybrid as a part of their file-sharing deployment model…

However, certain patterns are emerging that prove SOA is a best practice to define good cloud architecture…even though it may not be called SOA.

Many enterprises are just tossing things out of the enterprise onto public and private clouds and hoping for the best. Making things worse, many of the larger enterprise’s clients do not see the forest through the trees, or, in this case, the architecture through the clouds. As the world’s biggest online retailer, Amazon wants a benevolent image to encourage trust from customers. Obtaining vast quantities of their personal information has been central to the firm’s business model. But Amazon is diversifying — and a few months ago the company signed a $600 million contract with the Central Intelligence Agency to provide "cloud computing" services.

Amazon now has the means, motive and opportunity to provide huge amounts of customer information to its new business partner. An official statement from Amazon headquarters last fall declared: "We look forward to a successful relationship with the CIA." The Central Intelligence Agency has plenty of money to throw around. Thanks to documents provided by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, we know that the CIA’s annual budget is $14.7 billion; the NSA’s is $10.8 billion…

Joyent wants to bring Linux into its fold of advanced computing cloud services, and has started offering an enterprise-supported version of the Canonical Ubuntu distribution that has been modified to take advantage of Joyent’s infrastructure. "The two companies actually complement each other, from an engineering perspective," said Bryan Cantrill, Joyent senior vice president of engineering, speaking of Joyent and Canonical, which manages the Ubuntu distribution.

Joyent already offers stock editions of Ubuntu, as well as another Linux distribution, CentOS. Joyent support for these images, however, is limited. The new version of Ubuntu, however, will be fully supported by Canonical. "If you have an Ubuntu related issue on the Joyent cloud, you can be assured that someone will support those images," Cantrill said…
