In June 2013, David Linthicum wrote in InfoWorld, “The journey to the cloud has moved from Interest and study to experimentation, and now it is moving to true production. In the next few years, we’ll see the accelerating adoption of cloud computing, though perhaps with less hype.” Linthicum asserts that this acceleration will in large part be due to the trust that enterprises are willing to place on cloud services.

But where does that trust come from? Is it simply because, as Linthicum wrote, “data has resided in the cloud for years without huge security breaches” and “businesses have figured that out”? That hardly seems like a good reason to place trust in a cloud service or application where an enterprise’s data will live…

As a pure-play IT cloud partner, I often am asked about the best cloud solutions telecom agents should sell to get their cloud compute practice off the ground. Hosted PBX and the like have been easy entry points into selling cloud for some telecom agents, but many are finding these "telecom extensions" provide neither a platform nor a path that leads to building a cloud computing practice. Closing this gap to the compute side is very high on most agents’ priority lists.

Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) must be hoping to head competitors such as Cisco Systems (CSCO) off at the pass—specifically, the network functions virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN) pass. A memo leaked this week to Re/code shows that HP has formed an NFV group within its cloud computing business unit and shuffled longtime networking lead Bethany Mayer over to lead it.

For nearly three years, Mayer has been senior vice president and general manager of HP Networking, but the memo shows she has been given this new role. That leaves an open spot in HP Networking’s leadership, but Mayer’s new role will be an important one. Although the NFV business unit actually will be part of HP’s cloud computing initiatives, Mayer’s role still will be heavily networking-based. And it’s really an important role the seasoned executive will be filling…

Hewlett-Packard’s boss has a plan. Or at least a vision for the long-struggling company. On Thursday, H.P. turned in better-than-expected quarterly earnings, sending the stock to levels just below the eve of its 2011 collapse, an event that led to the appointment of Meg Whitman as chief executive. Revenue was $28.2 billion, a drop of just 1 percent from a year ago, while net earnings were $1.4 billion, a rise of 16 percent.

The market could be saying that H.P. has returned to the status quo. That is, if there was a status quo to which an enterprise technology company could return. Since Ms. Whitman’s arrival, personal computer sales have shriveled, while mobile phones and tablets are on the rise. Cloud computing became a major force, changing both the demand for computer servers and the way software gets written…

Most users of online file sharing (OFS) services are extremely interested in hybrid solutions, according to a new survey from the Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG). Cloud-based file sync and share service Egnyte said those results are reflected in its own customers’ deployment preferences.

According to the study, more than two-thirds of current users of cloud-based OFS services say they are extremely interested in hybrid solutions, citing flexibility and control over data as the top factor driving interest. Egnyte’s data revealed similar results, with 7 out of 10 Egnyte customers moving to its hybrid model within the first 90 days of deployment. And more than two-thirds of all customer inquiries and pilots call for hybrid as a part of their file-sharing deployment model…

What does SOA bring to cloud computing? Most of those who design cloud architecture and build cloud-based systems don’t understand the answer to that question. However, certain patterns are emerging that prove SOA is a best practice to define good cloud architecture…even though it may not be called SOA.
