As the world’s biggest online retailer, Amazon wants a benevolent image to encourage trust from customers. Obtaining vast quantities of their personal information has been central to the firm’s business model. But Amazon is diversifying — and a few months ago the company signed a $600 million contract with the Central Intelligence Agency to provide "cloud computing" services.

Amazon now has the means, motive and opportunity to provide huge amounts of customer information to its new business partner. An official statement from Amazon headquarters last fall declared: "We look forward to a successful relationship with the CIA." The Central Intelligence Agency has plenty of money to throw around. Thanks to documents provided by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, we know that the CIA’s annual budget is $14.7 billion; the NSA’s is $10.8 billion…

Joyent wants to bring Linux into its fold of advanced computing cloud services, and has started offering an enterprise-supported version of the Canonical Ubuntu distribution that has been modified to take advantage of Joyent’s infrastructure. "The two companies actually complement each other, from an engineering perspective," said Bryan Cantrill, Joyent senior vice president of engineering, speaking of Joyent and Canonical, which manages the Ubuntu distribution.

Joyent already offers stock editions of Ubuntu, as well as another Linux distribution, CentOS. Joyent support for these images, however, is limited. The new version of Ubuntu, however, will be fully supported by Canonical. "If you have an Ubuntu related issue on the Joyent cloud, you can be assured that someone will support those images," Cantrill said…

Cloud platforms have always been vulnerable to security threats mainly because of their architecture that makes them more like an “Anything-as-a-Service (AaaS) platform. There have been a plethora of researches and professional of the Cloud computing platforms are working restlessly to mine out the cross platform independence within the cloud platform which can ensure stable cloud connection across different platforms.

Among these start-ups and professional entities in the industry, CloudLock has been the most prominent pioneer which has rolled out many products and services for beefing up the security of the Distributed, Cross Platform Cloud structures. It was only a month ago when CloudLock announced that it had raised $16.5 million in Series C funding led by Bessemer Venture Partners, bringing its total funding to $28.2 million. Today, the impeccable Cloud service has launched ‘Selective Cloud Encryption Service’ which will make sure to select and secure the Cloud traffic based on the calculations by the intelligent algorithms meshed at the back end servers…

The pay-as-you-go model of cloud computing favors developers and architects who can design applications that run with the optimal amount of resources at all times. Overprovisioning a server means paying more than necessary to meet your needs. Erring in the other direction can be even worse: Underprovisioning resources causes an application to suffer in performance. Variations in application demand make the challenge of server sizing even more difficult, as the optimal set of resources does not stay constant.

One way to address these variations when using the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud is to create a load-balanced cluster of servers, then add or remove servers according to demand. You can manage the load-balanced cluster yourself, but another option is the AWS Auto Scaling service. The service maintains adequate performance levels without overprovisioning, while also alleviating some administrative overhead. Good candidates for the service are use cases that allow for readily distributed workloads across multiple servers, with significant variation in workloads…

In a recent customer meeting, several IT staff members were explaining some serious performance problems they were having with a newly deployed IT system. It began with a general discussion among us about the benefits of scalability and agility in cloud computing. Then they dropped a bombshell: “Oh, our application is in the cloud!”

Given our discussion about scalability in the cloud — juxtaposed with a newly deployed IT system that was not scaling even under a normal load — this statement seemed out of place. And here we have the crux of the matter: Why host a brand new IT system in the cloud and not take advantage of a core cloud benefit like scalability?…

At its recent MicroStrategy World 2014 conference, the enterprise software company introduced a portfolio of products to make it easier to perform analytics and make them easier to access through the cloud and mobile forms of computing. These announcements accelerate MicroStrategy’s transition to approaching corporate business users of analytics from its past focus on business intelligence, which typically is purchased by IT. This is a subtle but strategic shift that recognizes where growth opportunities lie and that analytics must be available on any device at any time. MicroStrategy made it clear that advances in the cloud, mobility and big data were integral to its product releases last year and is continuing in this direction in 2014 with the products in its MicroStrategy 9.4 suite.

A little recap from the end of 2013 will illustrate the trend. MicroStrategy launched a product called Analytics Desktop that is freely available to download and use. The product runs locally and provides capabilities for data and visual discovery, the building of dashboards and standard business intelligence…
