It’s good news/bad news time. The bad news is that someone got his or her hands on nearly 5 million Gmail addresses and corresponding passwords and made them all public. The good news is that even if your Gmail address is on the list, the password may be too old to merit much concern.

The Russian tech blog Habrahabr theorizes that the leaked Gmail addresses and passwords were most likely compiled through phishing scams, use of weak passwords and other common compromises, not as a result of a hacked Google server. Similar databases of email addresses and passwords from Yandex and Mail.ru, two popular Russian-language services, were made public earlier this week…

No "one size fits all" at the Pentagon. The different levels of mission risk at the Defense Department have posed a major challenge to building out DOD’s cybersecurity posture. Now, according to Deputy CIO Richard Hale, the department is working to make distinctions on the varying levels of risk by mission in order to make better decisions.

"Cybersecurity should vary by mission," Hale said in his keynote at the MeriTalk Cloud Computing Brainstorm event in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 10. "I shouldn’t spend as much money on morale and welfare website as I do on nuclear command control, it doesn’t make any sense."…

Josh Garza, the CEO of GAW Miners, first made a name for himself by building one of the top online retail stores for cryptocurrency mining equipment. Garza has pivoted that operation into the cloud by launching what he has dubbed hashlets. These hashlets are designed to create Bitcoins using a combination of ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuits) and cloud data center technology.

CloudWedge first reported on organizations wanting to use cloud to mint Bitcoins back in March 2014. The write up chronicled CloudHashing.com’s method of selling cloud contracts that “Reserves a certain amount of computational power for your own Bitcoin mining endeavours.” Garza and GAW Miners look to gain a piece of this market share by shifting his company from the online retail world. That’s partly due to the term “cloud computing” being used for a broad collection of services, delivered at many different layers (infrastructure, application platform, software, and business process), and implemented in a variety of different ways (public, private, hybrid, on-premises, and off-premises).

Microsoft has begun a months-long rollout of Delve, the first Office 365 application that taps into the suite’s Office Graph machine learning capabilities and maps connections between co-workers, documents, and information.  Delve, announced in March with the code-name Oslo, is designed to automatically surface colleagues, files and data that are more relevant and important to users’ work.
