Reverb Technologies has announced its Swagger 2.0 API interface and coordinated one of the "largest ever" open standards workgroups in the API space, combining contributions from nearly 500 companies. "Swagger effectively solves the age-old challenge of machine-to-machine communication, which has become increasingly complicated with cloud computing," claims the company.

With Swagger, developers can connect mobile devices to literally thousands of Swagger-enabled web services. The Swagger specification, first released in late 2010 by Wordnik (a property of Reverb) has been the most successful API interface effort to date. Historically, WSDL, WADL, and WADL 2.0 aimed to perform similar tasks but (says Reverb) were "plagued with complexity" — and had limited adoption across different programming languages and frameworks…

For all the enthusiasm surrounding the government’s move to the cloud – and there’s no shortage – one prominent federal CIO is emphatic that cloud computing, for all its virtues, is no panacea for the government’s technology challenges. That would be David Bennett, CIO at the Defense Information Systems Agency, or DISA.

At a government IT conference hosted by the tech consortium MeriTalk, Bennett acknowledged that "the cloud is a very viable scenario" for the feds, but he urges CIOs and other agency leaders to carefully consider which data sources and applications are suitable for a remotely hosted and managed environment…

Google (GOOG) is taking its Android device management software that enables remote management from Google Apps for Work to Apple iOS devices. The new iOS Sync for Google Apps for Work was unveiled as a solution that provides individuals and organizations with increased security to protect files, emails, documents and more content on iOS smartphones and tablets.

"iOS Sync is integrated right into the Gmail and Google Drive apps for iOS, so you don’t have to take any action to download an additional app. And iOS Sync will support iOS 7, 8 and, of course, the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus," wrote Clayton Jones, product manager for Google for Work, in a blog post…

Hewlett-Packard Co. is buying cloud-computing software developer Eucalyptus Systems as Chief Executive Officer Meg Whitman embarks on new acquisitions to bolster the computer maker’s businesses. Eucalyptus, founded in 2009, provides technology that lets companies store, process and deliver computing data via the Internet.

The Goleta, California-based company has raised $55.5 million in three financing rounds. Hewlett-Packard is paying less than $100 million, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The deal marks a return to mergers and acquisitions for Whitman after a dry spell following Hewlett-Packard’s $8.8 billion writedown of Autonomy Corp. in 2012, after buying the data software company for $10.3 billion a year earlier…

Continuous delivery provider CloudBees has shifted its company focus, dropping the runtime platform as a service (PaaS) of its offering to focus exclusively on open source software Jenkins. CEO Sacha Labourey told CloudTech it was a ‘hard’ and ‘emotional’ decision to move for CloudBees, which was founded in 2010.

“We realised at the beginning of this year that Jenkins Enterprise was growing very fast, beyond our expectations, and we knew that something was going on, but it took us a bit of time to really make the conscious decision that what we had to do was strictly focus on Jenkins,” Labourey said…
