OpenStack Foundation Says We Are At A Cloud Tipping Point

At the opening of OpenStack Day in Melbourne, hosted by Aptira, Jonathan Bryce said we are at an important tipping point with cloud technologies. And while his comments were informed by the results of the foundation’s recent user survey, I think he’s right.

Bryce said the rise of OpenStack reflects a shift. When the platform was new, its adoption was driven by technical users. But the recent rapid growth is reflection of increased user adoption. That is, the uptake of cloud solutions has moved from technical drivers towards business drivers.

Just occasionally, you get it right. Six years ago, I called containers "every sysadmin’s dream," and look at them now. Even the Linux Foundation’s annual bash has been renamed from "LinuxCon + CloudOpen + Embedded Linux Conference" to "LinuxCon + ContainerCon".

Why? Because since virtualization has been enterprise IT’s favourite toy for more than a decade, the rise of "cloud computing" has promoted this even more. When something gets that big, everyone jumps on board and starts looking for an edge – and containers are much more efficient than whole-system virtualization, so there are savings to be made and performance gains to win…

Healthcare technology is booming thanks to cloud computing and wearables

Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers partner and longtime tech analyst Mary Meeker released her annual Internet Trends Report Wednesday, and more than anything else, she pointed to a transformation of health thanks to big data and cloud computing. The report, which is highly regarded in the tech community for its insights into trends and predictions, dedicated 31 pages to “Healthcare @ The Digital Inflection Point” and came up with some amazing stats about how technology and the Internet are transforming the sector.

At the top of the list, and perhaps the most remarkable number, is the way data is helping develop new medicines. Meeker said the digitization of medical data means that medical knowledge now doubles every 3.5 years versus doubling only every 50 years in 1950. Meeker added that the increased availability of health data is helping to accelerate clinical trials and encouraging collaboration with the scientific community as well…

Salesforce Launches $50M Fund for Cloud Consulting Firms

Salesforce’s corporate investment group Salesforce Ventures has announced a new $50 million fund on Wednesday, aimed at growing the next-generation of cloud consulting firms. The new SI (system integrator) Trailblazer Fund will provide new cloud consulting companies with the capital required to build and scale their Salesforce services capabilities.

To keep up with demand from customers, Salesforce is going to need 10 times the number of consultants in the next five years, according to data based on recent research from IDC. And what better way to grow this base than infuse $50 million into it. "Growing customer demand for Salesforce has created a critical need for more Salesforce-trained consulting partners as part of the thriving ‘Salesforce Economy,’" Tyler Prince, EVP of Worldwide Alliances and Go-to-Market Innovation, Salesforce said in a statement…
