At a roundtable event in Sydney today hosted by four technology vendors – Eaton Corporation. Kroll Ontrack, WatchGuard and Tecala – warned that without proper technology plumbing companies could be achieving short-term financial benefits, while putting themselves at risk in the future.

According to Rodney Gedda, a senior analyst with Telsyte, Australian enterprises are enthusiastic adopters of both virtualisation and cloud computing. He said that 56 per cent of organisations had begun virtualising their servers, while 19 per cent of companies were now committed to, or were building private clouds…

Today, Cadence announced additional support for companies designing the cloud. The cloud is not only a form of centralized computing and storage, but also requires very fast and rich interfaces. Cadence is adding two protocol standards used in cloud computing applications, 12Gb/s SAS and NVM Express, to the Cadence Verification IP (VIP) Catalog.

I spoke with Susan Peterson, director, of product marketing within the System Realization group at Cadence about this announcement. While everyone will cover the new protocols, and I will talk about them a little, I was more interested in the role that Cadence plays within the community. Many IT departments have been committing acts of virtualization for years. Servers, storage, networking and desktops all have fallen victim to our erstwhile inventiveness, while demonstrating with relative ease that virtualization readily scales up to meet the needs of human busywork.

Cloud computing presents both challenges and opportunities for personal computing giants. Microsoft is "re-imagining" Windows for cloud-connected devices. Meanwhile, Intel rethinks its microprocessor strategies for mobile devices and servers, seeking to embrace the cloud at both ends of the consumption supply chain. For these incumbents that defined the personal computing era, the post-PC era future requires leaping from the past, not clinging to it.

Where the "Wintel" marriage is likely to remain strongest is the server. Microsoft’s post-PC — what I call cloud-connected device — strategy is two-fold: Providing direct, hosted services or applications businesses can host internally and expanding Windows’s support for additional chip architectures. For its part, Intel develops microprocessors for more device categories, while optimizing server chips for cloud applications and services, such as the recently announced Xeon processor E5-2600 product family…
