Dell Cloud Technology Speeds Pediatric Cancer Research

By David
Grazed from Information Week.  Author: Nicole Lewis.

Dell recently announced it has completed work on a high-performance computing cluster that will fuel a clinical trial for children with cancer.

The high-performance computer cluster, which was donated to the Phoenix, Ariz.-based Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), will allow researchers to quickly access more precise data on diagnostic images, genetic sequencing of the RNA in tumors, and genetic variations that contribute to the disease.

Dell began building the cluster in December using its PowerEdge M420 Blade Server, which supports a parallel approach to computation. With this technology, TGen can comprehensively analyze a patient’s tumor RNA profile in one day, compared to the seven days that were previously required–an important advantage in battling aggressive childhood cancers like neuroblastoma…

Rules needed to address security concerns of cloud computing

By David
Grazed from Economic Times.  Author: Kapil Sibal.

Amid growing popularity of cloud computing, new regulations are needed to address data safety concerns as most of the servers that host personal information are located in foreign lands, Communications and IT Minister Kapil Sibal said today.

Cloud computing allows companies to use services, softwares and applications on a pay-per-use model without actually owning any hardware infrastructure or licence. This helps companies save on setting up IT infrastructure or purchasing licences.

Data is hosted on servers, which are often located in foreign countries…

Study: Mobile, Cloud Computing Factoring Into Disaster Recovery

By David
Grazed from Network Computing.  Author: Esther Shein.

It’s almost hurricane season–or, for enterprises, time to check the status of business continuity and disaster recovery plans. This year, advancements in mobile technology are enabling businesses to include technologies such as cloud computing and mobile security services, according to a recent disaster planning study from AT&T.

Among the most telling findings of the telecom company’s 2012 annual business continuity survey of 504 IT executives: 67% of respondent businesses have included wireless network capabilities as part of their business continuity plans, while 38% are making investments in cloud computing for security, performance and cost savings…

By David
Grazed from MarketWatch.  Author: PR Announcement.

iTrinegy, on Stand 2190, will again be exhibiting at the Cloud Computing World Forum UK, this year, showing its proven "Cloud Transformation Solution" Taking place on the 12-13 June at Earls Court, London, this is Europe’s largest cloud computing event with more than 4,000 decision makers from around the world.

At last year’s event iTrinegy launched their Proof-of-Concept ‘Try before you buy’ networked application performance solution. Building on their years of experience in application performance over difficult networks they have recently signed up more customers looking to understand how applications would perform in cloud networks before committing their budget and resources to such a major implementation. Frank Puranik, Product Director, "We are really excited to exhibit at the Cloud World Forum and this year we giving visitors to our stand a vision of how applications will perform in different networked environments such as Cloud, Mobile and Virtualised environments. Having the ability to understand the impact of migrating to new "unproven" networks associated with these types of deployment prior to actual implementation greatly reduces the risk of failure and cuts down on the need for retrospective fixes. There will also be an opportunity to win an e-reader…

Prepare the ground for the cloud

By David

Grazed from The Guardian.  Author: Malcolm Herbert.

Cloud computing is ubiquitous in technology conversations. It’s not just a buzzword, but a catalyst to a new wave of thinking. Cloud is still yet to show its full capabilities as the demands on the world’s datacentres continue to rise – open source and virtualisation are spear-heading this movement.

There are many opportunities for organisations to benefit from cloud computing and slot it into their overall IT strategy. However, instead of getting overwhelmed and "eating too many elephants" it’s important to prepare the groundwork for cloud and pace the business by laying a solid foundation…

The Secret to Optimizing the Big Virtual Data Explosion

By David
Grazed from BusinessWire.  Author: PR Announcement.

In today’s day and age, many SMBs and enterprise-level businesses are “taking to the skies” with cloud computing. These companies realize that working in the cloud comes with many benefits – including reduced cost of in-house hardware, ease of implementation and seamless scalability. However, as you will read on and discover – performance-impacting file fragmentation and the need for defragmentation still exists and is actually amplified in these environments. Based on these factors, it must now be addressed with a two-fold proactive and preventative solution.

Let’s face it – we generate a tremendous amount of data and it’s only the beginning. In fact, findings included in a recent study by IDC titled “Extracting Value from Chaos” predict that in the next ten years we will create 50 times more information and 75 times more files. Now regardless of destination, most of this data is generated on Windows-based computers, which are known to fragment files. Therefore, when files are manipulated they become fragmented before even reaching the cloud. This occurs because as they are worked with, they get broken up into various pieces and scattered to numerous locations across the hard disk. The result is increased time necessary to access these files and affects system performance…

One Secret for Success in Cloud Computing – Fewer Choices

By David
Grazed from Smart Data Collective.  Author: Paul Barsch.

Retailers have long followed the mantra of “stack it high and watch it fly”. In fact, stores often pile goods to the ceiling, make shoppers navigate in-aisle displays, and price everything with bright and obnoxious signage.  However, some progressive retailers have discovered that reducing “choice” can actually boost sales.  And in terms of cloud computing, one successful vendor has taken a page from this retailing playbook by removing confusing computing choices.

In “Less is More in Consumer Choice”, I cited a 2007 study in which researchers conducted experiments in a shopping mall aimed at understanding mental fatigue associated with too much choice.  The studies concluded that when faced with too many buying options, study participants couldn’t stay on task in completing projects—in effect their brains were overwhelmed by choice overload…

Cutting edge: Taking your business into the ‘clouds’

By David
Grazed from The Express Tribune.  Author: Vaqas Asghar.

Imagine having access to all your important data at any time, anywhere in the world, with no need to constantly back it up. Imagine a fully functional computer with less storage space needed than a flash drive. That is the concept behind cloud computing.

Much to the delight of the tech-savvy, Cybernet unveiled RapidCompute – Pakistan’s first cloud computing service – at a local hotel here on Tuesday.

Breaking down the etymology, the ‘cloud’ refers to the internet, while computing refers to the use of computers for any activity.

Cloud computing is the use of shared resources distributed through a network to achieve economies of scale. For corporate users, this leads to a great reduction in capital expenditure, operating costs, and reduced stress vis-a-vis having to wait for updates and backing up data…
