Chinese investment in cloud computing ‘to reach $1b by 2016’

By David
Grazed from China Daily.  Author: Tuo Yannan.

China spent $286 million on cloud-computing infrastructure last year, and the amount will increase to more than $1 billion in 2016, the research company IDC said on Tuesday.

China, where cloud computing is one the fastest-growing industries, accounted for around 10 percent of global cloud-computing investment last year, which totaled $28 billion, according to IDC.

Kitty Fok, vice-president of IDC Asia-Pacific, said that China’s IT market is expected to have a volume of $163.2 billion this year, accounting for 7.6 percent of the global total.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, along with other national departments, announced outlines on developing the country’s cloud-computing services through pilot and demonstration cities and regions last year…

Cloud Computing 101

By David
Grazed from The Huffington Post.  Author: Matthew Finnie.

"Cloud Computing" – we’ve probably all heard the term in one context or another, but what is it exactly, why should you care, and how can you cut through the hype?

In its simplest form, and paraphrasing NIST, Cloud Computing enables convenient on-demand access to a pool of configurable resources like networks, storage, computers/servers, and applications.

Basically the cloud represents having your data, images, videos, applications, IT systems in one always available always accessible place, which can be expanded or shrunk according to demand, whenever you need it. Connect any device PC, laptop, tablet, mobile to the cloud and all the stuff you need is there ready to be watched, viewed, run etc…

Illuminating the Cloud for Increased ROI

Whenever I speak with CIOs and IT professionals about the benefits of cloud computing, I encounter a wide range of responses – from enthusiasm, to guarded optimism, to even outright skepticism.

While it’s clear that the cloud is playing an increasingly central role in IT, both the opportunities and challenges inherent therein, can be tricky to navigate. This has created a situation where efficient and economical use of the cloud is not all that common.

By clarifying some of the major issues swirling around cloud computing, I hope to equip the business community with knowledge and insight that will allow them to better maximize their IT investments.

Supply Chains in the Cloud: Single-Tenant Versus Multi-Tenant Architectures

By David
Grazed from IT Business Edge.  Author: Michael Vizard.

As supply chain management emerges as one of the next killer cloud computing applications, a familiar debate is starting to emerge over whether single-tenant private clouds are going to be preferable to multi-tenant cloud environments.

As a provider of a single-tenant supply chain management application that can be deployed in a private cloud, the folks at E2open are making the case that the information in a supply chain is too sensitive to risk being deployed in a multi-tenant environment. What’s most significant about that stance is it serves to highlight the tensions between security and collaboration in the cloud. In theory at least, organizations that were sharing the same cloud computing service in the cloud to manage their supply chain might be able to better collaborate…

CloudPassage Looks to Lock Down Cloud Servers

By David
Grazed from ServerWatch.  Author: Kenneth Corbin.

For IT pros, the benefits of the cloud are by now familiar. But as enticing as the agility, streamlined management and on-demand provisioning benefits that cloud computing offers, security remains an area of deep concern.

And while leading vendors have made considerable strides in addressing the potential security problems associated with the cloud — both real and perceived — the security burden still falls to both suppliers and customers, many of whom have been moving rapidly to embrace the technology but sometimes treat security as an afterthought.

"The race to the cloud is on," says Rand Wacker, vice president of product management at CloudPassage, a two-year-old startup specializing in securing cloud servers. "Companies large and small are scrambling to increase their speed to market, and reduce cost by moving their servers to a cloud-based architecture."…

Cloud Computing: Greenplum entices developers with fully loaded Hadoop sandbox

By David
Grazed from InfoWorld.  Author: Ted Samson.

In a move to garner valuable support from the developer community while honing its own big data chops, EMC-offshoot Greenplum has unveiled a cloud computing cluster called Analytics Workbench, built on Hadoop, on which developers can freely experiment with their code in the cloud.

Greenplum’s end goal is to see Hadoop widely deployed in the enterprise — no doubt with the company’s own big data analytics tool in the mix as it takes on rivals like IBM and Oracle, as well as other organizations jumping aboard the Hadoop wagon.

The 1,000-node cluster boasts 24PB of physical storage and 48TB of memory, and it comes loaded with the entire Hadoop stack, including the Hadoop Distributed File System, MapReduce, Pig, Hive, HBase, and Mahout. Also in the grab bag is Greenplum Database, intended to augment the workbench’s SQL capabilities. Additionally, Greenplum is serving up open, freely available data — both structured and unstructured — from such sources as social media, sensor devices, and call centers. The cluster is connected via 56Gbps InfiniBand interconnect…

PCI DSS Compliance in the Cloud: Challenges and Tactics

By David
Grazed from Wired.  Author: Andrew Hay.

Perhaps the largest point of confusion with regards to the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) and cloud computing is the question of upon whose shoulders does compliance fall? In 2011, several cloud providers began asserting that their clouds were validated as PCI DSS compliant. That’s all well and good, but unfortunately this validation does not trickle down to the providers’ customers who deploy servers within the provider’s infrastructure. If your organization wants to migrate PCI DSS in-scope systems to public cloud, there are several things to consider.

First and foremost, a cloud provider’s platform is just that – a platform. Physical servers are not certified PCI compliant by the hardware manufactures; just as operating system vendors are not. The platform and software employed serves as a medium upon which businesses can operate. It should be noted, however, that PCI certification for a provider does not just cover material, but process as well…
