The direct proliferation of cloud computing has resulted in a huge boom in traffic over the WAN. There are more users connecting, a lot more data points, and the modern data center sits right in the middle. Throughout this entire cloud evolution – the infrastructure was forced to change as well. Edge and core routing needed to evolve to handle this influx of traffic and new content.

Service providers as well as enterprises deploying demanding, mission-critical applications are facing unique networking challenges. As I wrote in my last column, it’s clear that cloud computing enables, and imposes, enormous change in applications. In that article, I focused on the technical changes cloud computing is forcing on application architecture — all designed to support the increased scale and load variability, higher performance expectation and changed pricing that cloud computing imposes.

What I didn’t address was another traditional application assumption that cloud computing is upending: The application lifecycle. Specifically, the cloud requires a significantly faster rhythm of application management, which will impose change on IT organizations.

Dell Inc., courtesy of its President’s Advisory Board, has looked into the future to prognosticate the tech trends that will define 2014 and highlighted cloud computing, changing IT security challenges, and the decline of "bring your own device" policies at the workplace, according to a company blog post.

Dell’s President’s Advisory Board is made up of 20 high ranking corporate information officers. Cloud computing transitions information technology (IT) from being "systems of physically integrated hardware and software" to "systems of virtually integrated services." This transition makes interoperability the difference between the success and failure of IT deployments, especially in the Federal government.

Recent government IT failures like the healthcare portal roll out highlight this critical difference. Leading specialists serving on the federal health IT committee have voice their concern about the lack of comprehensive interoperability. "I’m concerned that this program isn’t focused on creating an inter-operable system that would allow unaffiliated systems to share medical information,” Sen. "Government regulations keeping pace with the market," "exit strategies," and "international data privacy" were found to be the top three areas where organizations have the lowest confidence in cloud computing. The findings were based on the first global survey jointly conducted by non-profit organizations ISACA and Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) on 252 participants in 48 countries, representing cloud users, providers, consultants and integrators from 15 industry segments.

In the "Cloud Market Maturity study," those who identified themselves as cloud users (85%) were asked to rank on a scale of zero to five a number of considerations in cloud computing, with zero being the least confident. The following shows the top 10 issues that cloud users have (ranked from least confident to most confident):..
