To all the developers building applications in the cloud that need to comply with HIPAA privacy rules: You’ve just gained a big ally. Internet behemoth Google recently announced its cloud platform will now be HIPAA-friendly and will support business associate agreements going forward.

Google started inking business associate agreements back in 2013 when the HIPAA Final Omnibus Rule went into effect, making BAs accountable for violating certain HIPAA privacy and security rules. This February, the company went one step further. "To serve developers who want to build these applications on Google’s infrastructure, we’re announcing support for business associates agreements for our customers," wrote Google Cloud Platform Product Manager Matthew O’Connor, in a Feb. 5 company post. "We’re looking forward to supporting customers who are subject to HIPAA regulations on Google Cloud Platform."…

Gartner predicts that Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) will achieve a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 41.3% through 2016, the fastest growing area of public cloud computing the research firm tracks. Global spending on public cloud services is expected to grow 18.6% in 2012 to $110.3B, achieving a CAGR of 17.7% from 2011 through 2016. The total market is expected to grow from $76.9B in 2010 to $210B in 2016. These two trends converge with the concept of Storage infrastructure as a service (SIaaS), a place where innovative company Nasuni plays.

Nasuni provides a consolidated storage solution for the distributed enterprise that offers build-in backup, replication and offsite protection using an on-site appliance connected to the Cloud to help company’s reduce their storage costs. The company offers large companies a service that gives everyone fast access to secure and centrally managed storage, no matter where they are located. IBM has introduced a host of development capabilities, training and benefits programs to help its business partners succeed in cloud computing, data analytics, mobile computing, social business and security. The news came as part of IBM’s PartnerWorld Leadership Conference held this week in Las Vegas. Some of the most important announcements at today’s conference were:

• The introduction of the Power Development Program, which will allow developers access to IBM Power System Servers to build, port and test applications for free.
• Partner access to pre-built Business Partner solutions with validated cloud integration and mobile and social capabilities.
• A new massive open online course (MOOC) education platform called ThinkAcademy, designed to help business partners develop skills around cloud delivery services and solutions…

Microsoft reportedly is putting more emphasis on its Internet of Things (IoT) team, which could mark a major change in the way that the company targets consumers and channel partner customers. According to Zdnet, Microsoft’s IoT team is in the process of a major reshuffling, with several additions to the team coming onboard within the past two months.

The article cites the LinkedIn profiles of several Microsoft employees, all of which list new titles pertaining to Microsoft’s IoT division, proving the company’s renewed interest in beefing up “the operating systems and cloud services that power non-PC/tablet/phone/console ‘things’ such as industry devices, wearables, automobiles, consumer electronics, etc.,” according to one such LinkedIn profile…

One of the hottest categories of tools to help manage your cloud computing deployment has been optimization and price performance services that recommend how you can more efficiently use cloud resources. Up until now, however, these services have been focused on public cloud providers like Amazon Web Services and Rackspace.

The direct proliferation of cloud computing has resulted in a huge boom in traffic over the WAN. There are more users connecting, a lot more data points, and the modern data center sits right in the middle. Throughout this entire cloud evolution – the infrastructure was forced to change as well. Edge and core routing needed to evolve to handle this influx of traffic and new content.

Service providers as well as enterprises deploying demanding, mission-critical applications are facing unique networking challenges. Here’s part of the issue: Network administrators are trying to deal with new types of cloud growth issues by adding additional providers, creating and applying routing policies in reaction to situations, and rerouting the traffic manually…

As I wrote in my last column, it’s clear that cloud computing enables, and imposes, enormous change in applications. In that article, I focused on the technical changes cloud computing is forcing on application architecture — all designed to support the increased scale and load variability, higher performance expectation and changed pricing that cloud computing imposes.

What I didn’t address was another traditional application assumption that cloud computing is upending: The application lifecycle. Specifically, the cloud requires a significantly faster rhythm of application management, which will impose change on IT organizations.
On the face of it, it may not be obvious why the technical capability of cloud computing would transform IT organizations and their processes…
