A major part of today’s cloud computing strategy for enterprises centers on storage. The benefits of cloud storage to enterprises are far-reaching: a hybrid solution can simplify the management of primary storage, archival, data protection and disaster recovery. It’s a tall order.

In addition to the layers of storage and complexity, IT managers must juggle ongoing storage management using multiple dashboards, energy costs, data center real estate, information management, upgrades and migrations, according to a recent executive summary by technology analysts Taneja Group…

The 4 biggest threats facing the cloud

By David

Grazed from Fortune.  Author:  JP Mangalindan.

Earlier this week, portions of Amazon’s cloud computing service crashed, impairing Foursquare, Netflix and Instagram as well as millions of users. While service was quickly restored, it marked the second major incident of its kind in the last six months — and that is raising concerns with some.

Putting parts or all of your company in the cloud — the oft-used term to describe large, remotely hosted data sets and applications — is typically far more cost-effective than relying on traditional servers and internal IT departments. But, incidents like these can also bring a cloud-hosted company to its knees…

Search for ‘God Particle’ Higgs Boson leverages Public Cloud

By David

Grazed from International Business Times.  Author: Carl Bagh.

The platform is called LHC@home which has been crafted to enable volunteers to "help physicists develop and exploit particle accelerators like CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, by contributing spare processing capacity on their home computers. An extension of this platform, called LHC@home 2.0, enables volunteers to run simulations of particle collisions in the LHC’s giant detectors, helping physicists compare theory with experiment in the search for new fundamental particles."

The search for the Higgs boson particle is theoretically explained as the particle which gives mass to other particles. The study has resulted in the erection of one of the largest and complex "atom smasher" in the world called the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)…

Hotlink Corporation emerged from two-and-a-half-years underground the other day clutching a check for $10 million from a couple of VCs in one hand and a "super-hypervisor" in the other.

The start-up’s got a way to make VMware’s vCenter manager natively support Microsoft’s Hyper-V, Citrix’s XenServer and Red Hat’s KVM hypervisors all at the same time without vCenter even knowing those outlanders aren’t its own ESXi…

Apple Developers Handed Stepping Stone To iCloud

By David

Grazed from Dr. Dobbs.  Author:  Adrian Bridgwater.

The natural extension of this product to the cloud computing model of IT service delivery is perhaps no surprise; its occurrence is perhaps only masked by the arguably over-hyped publicity wagon that has pushed iCloud itself — even by Apple’s standards.

Developers hungry for the opportunity to switch to the Apple-flavored cloud can open their Safari browsers (we’re kidding — any browser is fine) and visit me.com/move to initiate the migration…
