By David

Steve Dietch, vice president of marketing for cloud solutions and infrastructure for Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ), believes vendors that heterogenous cloud solutions are doing customers a disservice.

Speaking at GreenPages’ 15th annual technology summit, Dietch urged customers to avoid "vendor lock in" as they make the move to the cloud; doing so, he said, would ensure they do not perpetuate the IT sprawl that has resulted in as much as 80 percent of IT budgets being spent on maintaining systems with only 20 percent on innovation. Deitch said HP’s cloud strategy is aimed at supporting heterogenous, multivendor environments including everything from Cisco’s Unified Compute System to multiple hypervisors like VMware and Microsoft offerings…

By David
Grazed from BusinessWire.  Author:  PR Announcement.

Aimed at shaping the future of cloud computing and how increasing numbers of everyday devices will add computing capabilities, Intel Labs announced the latest Intel Science and Technology Centers (ISTC) both headquartered at Carnegie Mellon University.

These centers represent the next $30 million installment of Intel’s recently announced 5-year, $100 million ISTC program to increase university research and accelerate innovation in a handful of key areas. As with previously announced ISTCs for visual computing and secure computing, the new centers encourage tighter collaboration between university thought leaders and Intel. To encourage further collaboration, the ISTCs use open IP models with results publically available through technical publications and open-source software releases…

By David
Grazed from Data Center Knowledge.  Author: Editorial Staff.

Cloud computing is real inside Intel IT. In fact, it is one of our Top 3 Priorities this year (the other two are “consumerization” and security).  At Intel, our private cloud infrastructure as a service implementation is important because it means we can deliver a highly available computing environment that provides secure services and data on-demand to authenticated users and devices from a shared, elastic, and multi-tenant infrastructure.

Now you’re probably thinking, “sounds good, but so what?”  Well, let me explain.

With cloud computing looming as the next big thing in higher education, Citrix Systems‘ recent acquisition of Cloud.com, an open source cloud computing platform, will have caught the attention of university CIOs nationwide. The move bolsters Citrix’s cloud infrastructure portfolio by giving customers virtualization, orchestration, and networking solutions that are designed and built specifically for the new cloud era…

Cloud.com is the developer of CloudStack, an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) software platform that simplifies the process of building, deploying, and managing a cloud computing environment. As opposed to traditional enterprise server virtualization platforms where cloud management is layered on top, Cloud.com’s product is designed to help users design and create a cloud infrastructure from the ground up. As a result, customers have the ability to choose the hardware, software, management products, and service providers they want—an important consideration for CIOs leery of getting locked in with any one vendor…

By David
Grazed from SearchCIO.  Author: Christina Torode.

SuperValu Inc. operates more than 2,500 retail locations nationwide. A vast amount of personal customer information flows through its systems, and high on its list of IT priorities is securing identity and access management. For now, a private cloud, or internal cloud, appears to be the safest bet for managing personal data. Identity management in the public cloud isn’t out of the question, Phillip Black, senior manager of identity services at the Minneapolis-based retail grocery chain, told SearchCIO.com. It also would be cheaper than building a private cloud; but given regulatory concerns, he is leaning toward a hybrid cloud as the optimal approach…

Demystifying the myths of cloud computing

By David
Grazed from DatacenterDynamics.  Author:  Penny Jones.

Myth #1 – Cloud isn’t secure
For any cloud provider, security is always the top priority. Most companies don’t have the luxury of dedicating resources on security. Cloud uses all the same security tactics and strategies, including physical data center security, separation of the network, isolation of the server hardware, and isolation of storage that enterprise data centers have used for the last 30 years, and good providers will in fact invest a lot more…
