In a recent post, Bernard Golden, one of the most respected thought leaders in the cloud space, asked the question: “Has cloud computing been a failed revolution?” He conveys the observation that Google search traffic for the term “cloud computing” peaked in 2011 and has trailed off since then.

It’s also notable that much of the excitement seen in the trade press and by analysts has shifted to the “Internet of Things” and “digital enterprise.” Just because there’s less of a spotlight on it doesn’t mean that cloud has diminished in strength and appeal. Salesforce.com got its start in 1999 selling software to businesses, helping them manage customer data for sales leads. Fifteen years later, the San Francisco-based company is ramping up to reach a different audience: the federal government. As part of this attempt, Salesforce debuted cloud services for federal agencies before 4,000 business partners and government representatives recently at a company-sponsored conference at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in the District.

Spearheading the public-sector push is Vivek Kundra, an executive vice president at Salesforce who until 2011 served as the United States’ first chief information officer. As CIO, Kundra issued a “cloud first” policy, mandating that federal agencies take advantage of the Internet cloud as a way to reduce costs and develop new applications…

In an effort to make computing services nearly as reliable as the telephone, CenturyLink last week opened Minnesota’s first high-reliability “Tier 3” public data center in Shakopee.

CenturyLink, based in Monroe, La., is best known to Minnesotans as the state’s largest telephone company.
