OpenStack, the open source cloud operating system, is not the most widely deployed private-cloud platform. But it’s a close second, according to a new survey from database vendor Tesora, which also said the rise in OpenStack adoption is helping push organizations toward scalable database and database-as-a-service (DBaaS) solutions. The survey results indicate that among responding organizations, 15 percent are running private clouds on VMware, followed by 11 percent using OpenStack.

But there’s more to the story than those numbers, since many of the organizations surveyed were not using a private cloud at all. Among those that were, OpenStack accounted for a third of the private cloud market share. Those are encouraging results for a cloud-computing platform that is much newer than VMware’s offerings, and still largely in the early adoption phase among enterprises…

Red Hat is acquiring eNovance, a European-based provider of "cloud" computing services, the Raleigh-based company announced Wednesday. The deal is worth nearly $100 million with Red Hat paying some $68 million in cash and another $27 million in stock for the privately held company.

The two companies have worked together on cloud projects over the past year. Both firms focus heavily on OpenStack solutions for clients seeking cloud-related services. Like Linux software, in which Red Hat is the global leader, OpenStack is based on open source solutions…

Virtustream is one of the most successful – yet least well known – public, private and hybrid cloud computing vendors in the market. While it doesn’t have the brand name recognition of the giants of this industry, such as the Amazon Web Services, Microsoft’s and Google’s of the world, it does have the accolades.

In Gartner’s recent Magic Quadrant report it named the company, which began in 2008 and is headquartered in Washington D.C., one of the top 15 revenue-producing IaaS vendors. It received the highest marks out of the vendors analyzed for security and compliance. While it doesn’t release revenue figures, it is growing by triple digits annually and was positioned overall mid-pack among its competitors by Gartner. For a 6-year old venture-backed company to be rubbing elbows with some of the big wigs of the industry isn’t bad…

Telecom New Zealand has inked a conditional agreement to buy cloud services specialist Appserve. Telecom chief executive Simon Moutter said that the acquisition provides a major new piece in the "cloud jigsaw" after significant investment across the business in cloud services.

“We see this as a strategic business move giving the Telecom group a very strong New Zealand cloud services portfolio. The acquisition of Appserve is an excellent complement to the purchase in 2013 of Revera and the ongoing investment we are making in data centres,” Moutter said. Telecom Retail CEO Chris Quin said thousands of businesses already supported by Telecom and its ICT services arm, Gen-i, want to take advantage of the cloud but need a hand to get there…

Cloud computing giants Google and Amazon have both unveiled new solid-state drive (SSD) block storage options for users of their respective virtual machine services, as the highly competitive cloud price war continues to heat up. Both Amazon and Google have announced new SSD-backed persistent storage options for their respective cloud server offerings, while Google has also added an HTTP Load Balancing feature.

Google said that the new SSD persistent disk product for its Compute Engine service sets a new bar for scalability and performance in Block Storage. It is charging users a flat fee of $0.325 per GB per month and supports up to 30 input/output operations per second (IOPS) per GB. Google also claimed on its Cloud Platform Blog that "while other providers count each and every IOPS and charge extra for them, SSD persistent disk includes IOPS in the base price with no extra charges or fees, making cost completely predictable and easy to model."…
