My last couple of columns have addressed cloud adoption patterns by IT organizations. Has Cloud Computing Been A Failed Revolution discussed the seeming ennui regarding cloud computing on the part of IT groups – that they seem less interested in the field, despite the belief on the part of vendors that the cloud represents tomorrow’s technology infrastructure. Most recently, The Real Cloud Computing Revolution described three real-world examples of companies using cloud computing to solve problems they couldn’t have addressed in the infrastructure models of traditional IT.

This week, two sets of information brought to mind William Gibson’s well-known aphorism "The future is already here – it’s just not very evenly distributed." Despite evidence such as that outlined in my most recent blog post, each describes a future of IT as little changed from a decade ago – mostly on-premises, mostly static with little possible resource elasticity and mostly unable to support the kind of innovation described in that post…

"Cognizant computing,” the next phase of the personal cloud movement, will become one of the strongest forces in consumer-focused IT, according to a new report from Gartner Inc. It will have an immense impact on mobile devices and apps, wearables, networking, services and cloud providers, the firm says.

Cognizant computing is a consumer experience in which data associated with individuals is used to develop services and activities according to simple rules, Gartner says. The services include alarms, bill payments, managing and monitoring health and fitness, and context-specific ads. Cognizant systems will provide services across multiple devices…

Positive reports of increasing levels of cloud adoption in the UK were plentiful in the technology media in the first half of 2014. The majority of coverage indicates that growing numbers of businesses are embracing the technology’s many benefits – such as cost and time savings – and this mirrors our own intelligence.

However, amongst the positivity remain concerns about security, with discussions surrounding the storage of, and access to, sensitive data remaining ever-present. While education remains an issue that needs to be addressed, one must consider the current landscape and cloud computing’s future prospects…

Anyone who has been roaming the halls of the IT department for 10 plus years deserves to crack a knowing smile when faced with today’s reigning zeitgeist, captured both precisely and imprecisely by the word “disruption.” “I’ve seen this movie before” is what anyone with even an iota of memory should be thinking.

The real issue is—and perhaps the danger lies herein too—that despite the fact that IT has seen changes in the prevailing rhetoric and intellectual theory of the time at least 3 times in the last decade, this time things are truly far more dangerous than in the past. RECENT data from a number of research agencies show that cloud computing has become an integral part of the IT roadmap across almost all industry verticals. A recent study by Forrester Research found that the public cloud market is expected to reach US$191 billion by 2020, up from US$58 billion in 2013. Cloud applications will likely lead this growth and is forecast to hit US$133 billion in 2020. Cloud platforms will generate US$44 billion and cloud business services will reach US$14 billion.

Despite the high mindshare, security remains a major concern for chief information officers (CIOs). There is a sense that applications and data stored in the cloud, particularly the public cloud, are not as secure as when they are stored in the company’s own servers…
