Anyone who has been roaming the halls of the IT department for 10 plus years deserves to crack a knowing smile when faced with today’s reigning zeitgeist, captured both precisely and imprecisely by the word “disruption.” “I’ve seen this movie before” is what anyone with even an iota of memory should be thinking.

The real issue is—and perhaps the danger lies herein too—that despite the fact that IT has seen changes in the prevailing rhetoric and intellectual theory of the time at least 3 times in the last decade, this time things are truly far more dangerous than in the past. While indeed you have seen this movie before, this one might have a different ending…

The issue here is not one inherent to IT; instead its one inherent to modern capitalism which seems to have rediscovered its primitive roots. Put differently, I don’t believe IT folks are in danger because of the fundamental or inherent nature of Cloud computing, Mobility, or the rise of the empowered employee. They are in danger because of the CEO’s scalpel…
