The lifecycle of any given technological innovation follows a fairly standard path: proposal, development, deployment and then either success or failure based on cost, efficacy, execution or a number of other factors. With the cloud, however, we seem to be diverging from this pattern, or at the very least the process is being drawn out due to the radical and fundamental way it affects the entire data stack, and indeed the entire business model.

Continuing its effort to catch up in the cloud, Oracle unveiled a new software-as-a-service product aimed at e-commerce providers. Oracle’s new Commerce Cloud is designed to help online businesses launch feature-rich storefronts across desktop and mobile devices in a matter of weeks.

Offered as part of the database giant’s Customer Experience (CX) applications portfolio, the tool includes pre-integrated commerce features such as search and navigation, recommendations, promotions, reporting, payments, design templates and SEO, the company said Monday. The Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) consortium today announced it has formed a working group spearheaded by CipherCloud, Deloitte, Infosys, Intel and SAP to define best practices and industry standards that ensure API interoperability across data protection and security services delivered via the cloud.

Still in the formative stages, the Cloud Security Open API Working Group will focus on defining a common set of APIs that will be used to create a set of cloud-independent description schema for phone numbers, names, email addresses, etc.; a set of classification schema to define data sensitivity levels; standard specifications of control actions for encryption, masking and data residency; and a specification of monitoring characteristics of cloud applications, says Chenxi Wang, vice president of cloud security and strategy at CipherCloud…

Microsoft has been on a quest to bolster its enterprise solutions, with CEO Satya Nadella declaring the dawn of SaaS – a sign that Microsoft is now turning to the cloud to provide companies with the technology they need to better manage money and operations. The technology giant’s partners appear to be responding to Nadella’s declaration.

Reports published late last week said Microsoft cloud computing partner Champion Solutions, which works closely with Microsoft for small business cloud services, is looking to strengthen its SaaS offerings through a strategic acquisition. Reports said Champion Solutions will acquire cloud and mobile technology service provider allAware, a deal that will boost Champion Solutions’ existing Microsoft Business Unit, MessageOps…

Jeffrey Snover, a 16-year Microsoft veteran and brilliant technologist, clearly identifies with the IT operations side of the house. "That’s my tribe," he says. "I’m very optimistic about their future." Despite that tribal affiliation, Snover may be helping to automate many operations folks out of a job, though I’m sure he would dispute that suggestion.
