The simplest way to bring Docker containers into an IT environment is to deploy them on a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) environment that provides a much needed layer of manageability. On Tuesday, Engine Yard, which last April acquired Deis, the most widely used PaaS for building and deploying applications based on Docker containers, announced that it is making an instance of that PaaS environment available on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

We’re hearing that New York-based DigitalOcean, a hot cloud computing startup founded in 2011 that competes head-to-head with the $6 billion Amazon Web Services juggernaut, has closed a huge round of Series B funding.  The number we’re hearing is $83 million. DigitalOcean would not comment on the round.

 At the Amazon Public Sector Symposium last week, the NSA announced that it will be moving some of its IT infrastructure to AWS. The NSA follows several other federal agencies, including the Department of Defense and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), in joining the CIA in the Amazon cloud in the last nine months.

Although Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has not yet opened operations in the US, the rapid development of US e-retailer Amazon, particularly in cloud computing, poses a great challenge to the Chinese company, the Shanghai-based China Business News reports.

As the cloud market is maturing, we can expect a consolidation of this vibrant market. Whereas the initial upsurge was dominated by app developers and providers, the next phase will see an increasing focus on cloud solution providers. Some organizations are using hundreds of apps, not including those apps employees have acquired without involving the corporate IT department. Managing these huge numbers of apps has become a task in itself. Integrating them can be difficult, expensive, time-consuming and often simply impossible.

Some corporate IT providers such as SAP (SAP) are offering cloud solutions for core business units such as human resources, finanance, sales, marketing and procurement. Salesforce (CRM) started off with a CRM solution and added on additional functionality. WinWeb has taken a corporate view and has developed a comprehensive cloud system which integrates the different functions in one package…

With security threats growing across a wider range of devices, Cisco is aiming to boost its emphasis on "security everywhere" through its acquisition of the San Francisco-based firm OpenDNS. Valued at $635 million, the deal is expected to close in the first quarter of the 2016 fiscal year.

Founded in 2006, OpenDNS launched its line of cloud-based Umbrella security products in 2012. Combined with the company’s predictive threat intelligence platform, Security Graph, those products are aimed at providing "anywhere, anytime" security for the growing Internet of Things…

European traffic location and navigation provider HERE is spearheading an interesting project in Finland, one that seeks to use cloud computing to help vehicles spot a variety of road hazards well before a human driver can see them. This pilot project, expected to start in 2016, intends to assess the capability of current and emerging mobile network and location cloud technologies to transmit critical road safety information in real-time to vehicles, such as black ice, an animal on the highway, sudden traffic build-up, or an accident.

George Filley, who heads HERE’s digital transportation infrastructure program, said in a statement that his company is being tasked by the Finnish Transport Agency (FTA) and Trafi, the Finnish Transport Safety Agency, to lead this pilot – called Coop – and will work together with traffic information management service company Infotripla in implementing it…

What is an app? Most people think of them as the little, self-contained bits of software on our phones. They have shiny icons, and we get them through app stores. Sometimes they are useful. Often they are amusing distractions. But there is another way to think about apps in terms of the data they consume and create.

In this view, apps are what will turn the global network of smartphones into a massively distributed computing platform. Everything we know about user experience still applies in this world, but reducing friction for each user is only part of the problem. The bigger issue becomes how to coordinate the data bouncing around between all of these devices and servers in the cloud. This coordination is the primary problem that the JavaScript app platform Meteor has set itself to solve…

Before moving to the cloud, enterprises face a long to-do list of technical tasks, ranging from application redesign to defining security requirements. The biggest challenge with a cloud computing project, however, lies not with the technology itself, but in the massive cultural shift it requires of an organization.

"The technical [cloud] solutions are usually not that hard," said Odd Waller, manager of application hosting and service design at Volvo IT, the IT arm of Swedish manufacturing giant Volvo Group, during the Red Hat Summit last week. "But to get the whole company moving in that direction — getting 8,000 people to think in a way they haven’t thought before — that’s been the real work."…
