Stop me if you’ve heard this before. (Or don’t!) A new survey of 3,600 enterprise executives from IDC (sponsored by Cisco Systems) found the following:

* 54 percent expect the cloud — public, private, and, increasingly, hybrid — to allow them to allocate IT budgets more strategically
* 53 percent believe the cloud will help their company increase revenues

Duh, right? We’ve seen such surveys for years, with no new info. Why mention it? Because what’s changed is who is doing the surveys: Nowadays, the establishment technology companies and analyst firms create these surveys to state the benefits of the cloud. Part of the shift comes from the establishment tech firms trying to join the cloud bandwagon, so they want to be associated to the cloud in buyers’ minds…

What is the exact meaning of the term ‘platform as a service’? Often shortened to PaaS, the simple definition is that it is a cloud resource on which you can build and run your own application. ParkMyCloud, the only lightweight app that lets cloud computing customers schedule on/off times for their idle cloud computing services, today announced its general availability for users of Amazon Web Services (AWS). Based in Sterling, VA, ParkMyCloud raised a seed round from White Hall Capital in July 2015.

Beta customers have realized dramatic reductions in their AWS cloud costs, allowing a yearly subscription of ParkMyCloud to pay for itself in less than a month in most cases. A monthly subscription starts at only $29 for its “Startup” tier. “Whenever your boss comes over and says ‘Hey, why are we spending $8,000 a month on AWS EC2?’ you can show him how much you’re saving with parking,” said beta customer David Levinger, Senior Director of Information Technology, Paxata, a data preparation software company headquartered in Redwood City, California…

A new paper from Osterman Research in conjunction with CTERA Networks argues a clear need for organisations to adopt enterprise grade file sync and share (EFSS) software due to security and shadow IT fears.  Naturally, the conclusion of the report is less than surprising given CTERA’s continued push against consumer grade (CFSS) software.
