The only number you need to remember about Intel’s Data Center Group business for the next three years is this one: 15 percent. That is the annual growth rate that general manager Diane Bryant says that the company can deliver, on a compound annual growth rate basis, “out through time,” although the presentations that the top brass from Data Center Group only did comparisons between 2014 and 2018.

To deliver such growth – and consistently year after year, given the uncertainties of the global economy and the tectonic shifts taking place in the datacenters of the world – would be a truly remarkable feat. Assuming that Intel makes its numbers for 2015 and grows Data Center Group revenues by 15 percent, the company has averaged 17.7 percent growth, with a few blips up and down from that average, and even more significantly, has been able to grow its operating income at nearly twice that rate…

With the number of servers moving into the cloud accelerating rapid solution providers with cloud migration expertise are in high demand. To help automate that process Racemi, a provider of server migration tools, has expanded the number of data centers managed by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and IBM SoftLayer that it supports.

With this latest release of its DynaCenter software Racemi is adding support for eight data centers that are part of the IBM SoftLayer cloud, which in addition to the 12 IBM SoftLayer and the ten AWS data centers it already supports, gives solution providers and their customers a total of 30 data centers to choose from around the globe…

Google has been energetically pushing its cloud as a viable alternative to Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure when it comes to big, burly computing jobs. As part of that effort, on Tuesday it made previously announced “preemptible virtual machines” available to customers and said that the Broad Institute will be able to use these computing instances, along with software services from Cycle Computing, to perform complex cancer research.

Pre-emptible VMs is tech talk for deeply discounted (70% off!) cloud computing processors which can be applied to big research projects or other tasks as needed. Amazon AMZN 3.35% has long offered “spot instances” that customers can bid on in an auction-like format…

SUPPOSE FBI agents were to break into the postbox of an American company in Dublin to seize letters which might help them convict an international drug dealer. There would be general uproar, if not a transatlantic crisis. But that is essentially what the FBI wants to happen, albeit in the virtual realm: it has asked a court to order Microsoft, in its capacity as a big e-mail provider, to hand over messages from a suspect in a drugs case which are stored in a data centre in Ireland.

On September 9th an appeals court in New York will hear oral arguments on whether Microsoft has to comply. The case has many wrinkles, mainly due to the fact that the relevant American laws were written before the internet took off. In a sense, the court has to guess what lawmakers would have written into legislation if the global network had already been around…

Stop me if you’ve heard this before. (Or don’t!) A new survey of 3,600 enterprise executives from IDC (sponsored by Cisco Systems) found the following:

* 54 percent expect the cloud — public, private, and, increasingly, hybrid — to allow them to allocate IT budgets more strategically
* 53 percent believe the cloud will help their company increase revenues

Duh, right? We’ve seen such surveys for years, with no new info. Why mention it? Because what’s changed is who is doing the surveys: Nowadays, the establishment technology companies and analyst firms create these surveys to state the benefits of the cloud. Part of the shift comes from the establishment tech firms trying to join the cloud bandwagon, so they want to be associated to the cloud in buyers’ minds…
