The OpenDaylight Project, the networking industry’s largest open source project focused on Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), today announced the second OpenDaylight SDN Dragon’s Den will take place September 26, 2016, at OpenDaylight Summit 2016 in Seattle. The event provides a platform for participants to pitch various SDN application ideas in a lively "competitive showcase" environment.

The evening event invites participants to present a seven-minute pitch, including an overview and demo, to the "Dragons of Networking"– leading developers and users from the OpenDaylight community and the investor world who will evaluate and provide feedback on the technical viability and real-world applicability of the SDN application pitches.

Today, most organizations find it challenging to innovate fast enough to satisfy consumers. DevOps is a set of principles that tries to solve this problem. However, the workflow required to get applications from source code to running in production is complicated and riddled with fragmented technology solutions. The only way to achieve rapid, iterative innovation is to cobble these fragments together in one continuous pipeline. Unfortunately, these custom, homegrown pipelines are rigid, inflexible and hard to maintain. The do-it-yourself approach is a distraction and takes valuable cycles away from product engineering.

CloudPhysics, provider of data-driven insights for smarter IT, today introduced the Cost Calculator for Private Cloud with the Public Cloud Comparison tool. This data-driven solution automates the process of determining the accurate costs of a customer’s currently resourced on-premises Virtual Machines (VMs). Customers can compare those amounts to the costs for the same VMs if they were migrated to a public cloud.

The Cost Calculator for Private Cloud allows the customer to rightsize VMs by comparing a VM’s current resources, such as CPU and storage, with the amount the VM actually requires to perform its functions. Because many VMs are overprovisioned with resources, rightsizing helps a customer save costs per workload, whether on-premises or in the cloud. By rightsizing workloads, customers are assured that VM provisioning fits actual usage.

As per a research report by analytics firm IHS Markit, Verizon Communications Inc. VZ, CenturyLink Inc. CTL and AT&T Inc. T have been aggressively implementing Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) in their business service offerings. The technological adoption of this capability enhances scaling functions and service delivery times which leads to improved end user experience along with higher growth in the business services segment. Notably, the business service segment is a rapidly growing industry in the telecom space.

Network Virtualization – A New Trend

At present, cloud based functions are provided by service providers through a series of expensive dedicated hardware. Through new software defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization capabilities, any service provider can run its network functions on a less expensive hardware by delivering services through virtualized enterprise customer premises equipment (vE-CPE)…

As cloud computing is growing at a rapid pace, enterprises and IT organizations are increasing adopting the cloud with a focus on infrastructure-as-a-service. As per the recent report by RightScale, 95% of respondents agree to using cloud with 77% private cloud adoption and 71% hybrid cloud adoption in 2016.

Considering these figures, it is apparent that more and more organizations are keen to migrate their mission-critical applications and systems to cloud to leverage the benefits of storage optimization, security, capacity and performance. However, migrating to the cloud is not easy as it may seem…

In the business world, it’s hard to throw a rock without hitting a compliance requirement. All must be obeyed, but some call for a high level of control and auditability. Governing bodies are exerting their authority like never before, increasing the number of auditors and handing out heavy fines – sometimes as much as $1 million. This has become the new norm, and it isn’t likely to turn around any time soon. It’s important, then, to be aware of the primary threats that could undermine compliance efforts. The top three such issues are discussed below.

The Challenges of SOX

Public companies in the U.S. as well as foreign companies listed on U.S. exchanges are required by Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) to assess their internal controls, have that assessment validated by an external auditor and report the assessment to the SEC. Information security professionals need to ensure that their organization complies with requirement in Section 302 and Section 404 of the legislation…

Four years ago, the New York Public Library began to move its web properties to the cloud. Today, the library system has all of its approximately 80 web sites in the cloud. The library has shrunk the number of on-premise servers by 40% and is running those web properties 95% more cheaply than if it had bought the hardware and software to do it all by itself.

The library took a risk on the cloud, and on Amazon Web Services (AWS), and it paid off. "We’ve grown but we’ve grown in the cloud," said Jay Haque, director of DevOps and Enterprise Computing at the library. "Today, we’re primarily focused on the digital identity of the NYPL. How our properties look…

ZeroStack, a one-stop shop for hybrid cloud infrastructure that delivers agility without complexity, today announced that it is the first to build capabilities that enterprises expect for OpenStack-based hybrid cloud to support applications in production.
