Joining an increasing number of companies, Asian telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies has released its own container orchestration engine, the Cloud Container Engine (CCE). Ying Xiong, Huawei’s chief architect of cloud computing, announced CCE version 1.0 at LinuxCon North America, being held this week in Toronto.

Like orchestration engines from CoreOS and Apprenda, CCE will be based on Google open-source Kubernetes platform . During his talk, Xiong discussed the growing use of containers in China. In 2016, Huawei found that 14 percent of companies were using containers in production, and another 23 percent were using them for test and development. About 44 percent had plans to adopt container technologies within the next six months…

Trying to understand what causes flash crashes is no longer just for financial regulators and Wall Street. It’s a big deal in Silicon Valley too. Since billions of dollars were quickly erased from U.S. stocks in May 2010, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has been trying to create a massive repository that would track stock and options trading from exchanges and broker-dealers on a daily basis.

That way regulators could quickly go back and find clues to what caused a market interruption. The lack of progress was highlighted last August when the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1,100 points in the first few minutes of trading, sending regulators scrambling once again to figure out what went wrong…

VMware has developed new SaaS-based tools that will enable organizations to bridge applications and workloads across multiple private clouds, including Amazon Web Services EC2 and S3, Microsoft Azure, IBM SoftLayer and the Google Cloud Platform. The company’s new VMware Cross-Services provide deployment, security and management of applications and that can be shared across multiple clouds.

Fred Trotter, the executive of healthcare research startup CareSet and healthcare startup DocGraph recently got to work only to find that Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) had locked him out of his cloud computing service. The CEO reported to work as usual on Monday morning only to finds that Alphabet had shut down his firm’s account on the Google Cloud computing service, worrying him and his team.

Trotter received a warning that one of his systems had been carrying out intrusive attacks against third parties. Alphabet condemned the act and warned the executive and his team that the problem should be fixed. Alternatively, they were expected to explain the legitimacy of the unexpected network traffic. Alphabet threatened to terminate the cloud services if the CEO and his team failed to carry out any of the requests…

VMware Inc. is set to unveil new products in a bid to eke out greater relevancy for the company in internet-based cloud-computing. On Monday, the company will announce Cloud Foundation, which combines software for storage, networking and virtualization into one package, as well as the ability to use that product as a service hosted in IBM’s cloud.

The company will also preview new Cross-Cloud subscription services that let customers manage and protect applications hosted in clouds from International Business Machines Corp., as well as market leader Amazon.com Inc. and Microsoft Corp. While reading the latest issue of the Economist, I was reminded that August 25th. marks an important anniversary for two key events: 25 years back, on August 25, 1991, Linus Torvalds launched a new operating system called Linux and on the same day in 2006, Amazon under the leadership of Andy Jesse launched the beta version of Elastic Computing Cloud (EC2), the central piece of Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The two are very interlinked. Linux became the world’s most used piece of software of its type. Of course Linux usage soared due to backers like HP, Oracle, and IBM to combat the Windows force. Without open-source programs like Linux, cloud computing would not have happened. Currently 1500 developers contribute to each new version of Linux…
