One of the greatest innovations for tech entrepreneurs over the last few decades has been cloud computing. The ability to move capital expenditures to operating expenditures is huge. It’s also incredibly empowering to scale your computing power as your business changes. You’ve also got the added advantage of a built-in platform with various tools to handle analytics, error logging, etc. Needless to say, cloud computing has changed the game.

We now seem to be entering a new phase of the future of work where traditional employees can be replaced more and more by freelancers who live and work remotely. This new paradigm reminds me of the rise of cloud computing a lot in terms of the utility, and its potentially disruptive nature…

Scale Computing today announced the availability of two new hyperconverged appliances, HC1150DF and HC5150D. The new appliances are designed for storage hungry data centers and for organizations of all sizes looking to maximize storage speed and capacity. By combining storage, virtualization and servers capabilities, the two new hyperconverged appliances offer the performance and capacity needed by large enterprise environments for a simple and agile IT infrastructure allowing them to focus on the business. 

The HC1150DF provides all-flash storage, while the HC5150D provides raw hybrid flash storage per cluster that retains the simplicity and ease of use that are now synonymous with the HC3 family.

Worldwide spending on public cloud services and infrastructure is forecast to reach $266 billion in 2021, according to the latest update to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Semiannual Public Cloud Services Spending Guide. Although spending growth will slow somewhat over the 2016-2021 forecast period, the market is expected to achieve a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21.0%. Public cloud services spending will reach $128 billion in 2017, an increase of 25.4% over 2016.

The United States will be the largest market for public cloud services accounting for more than 60% of worldwide revenues throughout the forecast and total spending of $163 billion in 2021. Western Europe and Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan)(APeJ) will be the second and third largest regions with 2021 spending levels of $52 billion and $25 billion, respectively. APeJ and Latin America will experience the fastest spending growth over the forecast period with CAGRs of 26.7% and 26.2%, respectively. However, six of the eight regions are forecast to experience CAGRs greater than 20% over the next five years.

This is the first open source-focused security management integration with Pivotal Cloud Foundry, enabling enterprise customers to embrace open source in their applications with automated visibility, intelligence, and control.  

Black Duck and Pivotal have collaborated to integrate Black Duck Hub and Pivotal Cloud Foundry to deliver a Secure DevOps process and user experience for building and deploying applications to Pivotal Cloud Foundry.

Calgary Scientific announced that its PureWeb software development platform supports the new AWS G3 Instances for Amazon EC2. The PureWeb platform transforms graphics-intensive applications into cloud-based services that can be accessed from the web or via any mobile device. The G3 instances combine the power of the NVIDIA Tesla M60 GPU along with more CPU power and host memory than any other cloud GPU instance available today for workloads such as 3D rendering, 3D visualizations, graphics-intensive remote workstations, video encoding, and virtual reality applications.

A few weeks ago, when pondering the possibilities of how Big Blue might reimagine and reinvigorate the IBM i platform, we outlined how this might be done – and how it might apply to a much broader customer base after it was done – in an article called The Cognitive Systems/500 2018 Edition. We forgot one of the possible components of a modern, integrated system and, amusingly, IBM has just announced support for it.

The bit of the software stack we forgot to mention was what is called hyperconverged infrastructure, or HCI for short, and this server-storage halfblood has become the underpinning of virtualized infrastructure at private datacenters for a number of key workloads and by thousands of organizations worldwide…

IBM will debut the newest in its decades-long series of mainframe computers for mainstream transaction processing Monday, this time focusing in particular on better protection of more data wherever it resides. The IBM Z features what the company calls “pervasive encryption,” providing the ability to encrypt all data in an application, database or cloud service.

Computer hardware in general and large mainframe-style computers have taken a big hit in the dawning era of cloud computing. But most large transaction systems such as credit-card processing, airline flight purchases and automatic teller machine systems still run on them. IBM said the Z represents the “most significant system overhaul” in more than 15 years…
