By David

Mobile developers see the heated competition between Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems reshaping the markets for cloud computing, enterprise IT, and social networking. Industry analysts, however, aren’t quite ready to count Microsoft out.

A Q3 2011 survey of more than 2,000 mobile developers, conducted by cross-platform development toolmaker Appcelerator and research firm IDC, finds developers divided about whether iOS or Android will come to dominate the mobile enterprise market. Some 44% of respondents sided with Apple while another 44% sided with Google when asked which OS would prevail in the enterprise market. The chance of other operating systems becoming relevant to enterprises was deemed to be small: 7% said they believed Windows Phone 7 would emerge ahead, 4% bet on BlackBerry, and just 2% foresee webOS triumphant…

By David

We haven’t written much on Appistry, a St. Louis-based cloud data management and analytics applications vendor. So when it was in the news this week with raising a new round of venture funding, it seemed like a good time to cover it here…

Its product family is called CloudIQ and there are several different components. First is the CloudIQ Manager that configures the components and monitors their health. Next is CloudIQ Storage module, which allows Hadoop users to upgrade to their storage repository when you need more reliable operations and higher throughput. And finally there is CloudIQ Engine, which is used to build scalable analytical applications.  Its family is designed for those very large data-intensive apps that are proliferating around the Internet these days, such as in genomics, that require huge horsepower and have to scale up tremendously and do it quickly, too…

By David

Steve Dietch, vice president of marketing for cloud solutions and infrastructure for Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ), believes vendors that heterogenous cloud solutions are doing customers a disservice.

Speaking at GreenPages’ 15th annual technology summit, Dietch urged customers to avoid "vendor lock in" as they make the move to the cloud; doing so, he said, would ensure they do not perpetuate the IT sprawl that has resulted in as much as 80 percent of IT budgets being spent on maintaining systems with only 20 percent on innovation. Deitch said HP’s cloud strategy is aimed at supporting heterogenous, multivendor environments including everything from Cisco’s Unified Compute System to multiple hypervisors like VMware and Microsoft offerings…

Grazed from BusinessWire.  Author:  PR Announcement.

Aimed at shaping the future of cloud computing and how increasing numbers of everyday devices will add computing capabilities, Intel Labs announced the latest Intel Science and Technology Centers (ISTC) both headquartered at Carnegie Mellon University.

These centers represent the next $30 million installment of Intel’s recently announced 5-year, $100 million ISTC program to increase university research and accelerate innovation in a handful of key areas. As with previously announced ISTCs for visual computing and secure computing, the new centers encourage tighter collaboration between university thought leaders and Intel. To encourage further collaboration, the ISTCs use open IP models with results publically available through technical publications and open-source software releases…
