By David

Grazed from Midsize Insider.  Author: Editorial Staff.

Apache. Ubuntu. WordPress. Name your favorite open source platform or application and it probably conjures up an image of agility, robustness, and most of all, freedom from proprietary technologies and single sources. All good, right? But can open source cloud computing be just as good?

IT managers at midsize businesses are evaluating open source solutions as part of their cloud strategies because of the flexibility and cost-effectiveness that open source platforms promise. But is this new idea ready for prime time? According to a recent article in ComputerWorld, the answer is "not quite, not yet, not for everyone."…

Assessing the business viability of cloud computing

By David
Grazed Financial Post.   Author:  Mitchell Osak.

Over the past 18 months, I have spent a great deal of time talking with CIOs about their Cloud Computing plans.  Despite the potential value, many firms have taken a cautious approach to deploying applications in the cloud.  And, it’s not for lack of interest or intent.  The current economic and regulatory climate has squeezed IT budgets and heightened sensitivity around business and brand risks.  Furthermore, Cloud Computing continues to evolve, driven as much by hype and technology as it is by user needs and perceptions. Companies will suCloud Computingessfully leverage Cloud Computing if they can align their IT strategies to their corporate priorities, understand and adopt relevant Cloud Computing best practices and overcome organizational barriers…

By David
Grazed from Mortgage Professional.  Author: Editorial Staff.

LenderMobile, a provider of mobile mortgage loan applications for iPads, has added two new features to its LenderMobile+ flagship app in response to users’ requests. The new imaging feature lets loan originators and borrowers take photos of documents with the iPad camera and add the images to loan files through cloud computing technology. Plus, the new loan notes feature lets users add notes to a loan file directly from their iPad.

On the iPad screen, loan originators can click the new photo button of the LenderMobile+ app to take pictures of documents for a loan file, such as W-2 forms, tax returns, paystubs and drivers licenses, and do so from anywhere, from a borrower’s home to the local coffee house. Or users can choose from the iPad app’s library of photos to add to a loan file. This feature gives users the option of cancelling photos, so they can re-take photos of documents if not satisfied with the original ones…

By David
Grazed from NetworkComputing.  Author: Esther Shein.

Compuware Corp. is responding to the surge in mobility, cloud computing, Big Data and networking with upgrades to its dynaTrace and Gomez application performance management (APM) tools.

The updates, announced this week, will affect how customers build and deploy applications, says Steve Tack, CTO of Compuware’s APM business unit. "Customers are working a lot more with native mobile applications … as well as the sheer proliferation of different browser types and a global base of customers, partners and employees," he says. "They’ve lost the insight into the relationship between performance and user behavior."…

Who Will Benefit From Cloud Gaming?

By David
Grazed from Seeking Alpha.  Author:  Mikhail Sourikov.

Cloud computing is a recent shift, that is occurring in the IT industry where more and more IT functions are transferred to remote servers, which are held by third parties. The development of the cloud is strongly related to the generalization of broadband internet, since to have an acceptable user experience, a high speed of data exchange between local machine and server is mandatory. Cloud gaming is just the part of the cloud that is related to the video game industry. Two pioneers in the field of cloud gaming are Onlive and Gaikai, both privately held. These two companies allow any person to connect to their servers and play the games that they have in store. The benefits of such services are obvious: people having cheap netbooks or old notebooks/PCs that cannot handle the graphics of more recent games, just need a high speed connection to play. No need to invest in expansive hardware and no need to buy discs or spend hours downloading the game. You only need high speed internet, and a credit card. Another advantage of cloud gaming is platform independence as for example you can play on your android or iOS powered tablet plenty of PC/console games…

Working Through the Immutable Laws of the Cloud

By David
Grazed from IT Business Edge.  Author: Arthur Cole.

The cloud may be the latest and greatest computing technology to come along, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t subject to the same laws of logic and nature that govern the rest of the universe.

And one of those laws is that there is a right way and a wrong way to perform every task, or, judging by my own personal experiences, there is an infinite number of wrong ways and only one right way.

To apply this thinking to the cloud, it’s important to take stock of what the cloud is and is not. And according to OpSource CEO Treb Ryan, one of the first mistakes most CIOs make is in thinking that the cloud is merely an extension of existing infrastructure. In fact, the cloud is an entirely new, and unique, data environment that will ultimately drive its own set of applications and business models. Failure to recognize this new paradigm increases the risk that the cloud infrastructure being deployed today will be mostly useless as the technology unfolds over the next decade…

Oracle: The Most Undervalued Cloud Name

By David
Grazed from TheStreet.  Author: Richard Saintvilus.

Along with "cloud computing," the term "big data" has become the buzzword of buzzwords on Wall Street. Though there are many who will jump at the chance to offer an opinion on the new craze, there are very few analysts that can describe what the concept really means — much less appreciate its real potential.

How can Wall Street truly forecast with any degree of accuracy the companies that are positioned to capitalize on this transition?

In that endeavor — what Wayne Gretzky would describe "skating to where the puck is going" — Wall Street has steadily focused on a handful of names that include some current titans such as Salesforce.com(CRM), EMC(EMC), and Juniper(JNPR). These are indeed qualified companies with undeniable expertise in this area. However, analysts continue to discount the value of database giant Oracle(ORCL), a pioneer that stands to profit not only in cloud technologies, but in analytics – its only competition in the latter coming from IBM(IBM) and SAP(SAP)

Cloud computing provides ‘flexible, mobile workforce’ for SMEs

By David
Grazed from HostAway.co.uk.  Author: Kevin Jenson.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) see the ability to work in a flexible and mobile way as the biggest advantage of adopting cloud technology, research shows.

In a recent IBM study, 39 per cent of senior managers said that a more adaptable and flexible workforce was their number one reason for implementing cloud computing in the workplace, followed by the cost efficiency of this type of service.

This can be largely attributed to the increasing proliferation of smart mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, so that the workplace no longer needs to be defined as a static, physical place…
