Top 100 Cloud Services Providers Grow 45 Percent to $2.3B

Combined cloud services revenues hit $2.3 billion for the world’s Top 100 Cloud Services Providers (CSPs) in 2011, up 45.6 percent from 2010, according to the second annual Talkin’ Cloud 100 survey results, released today.

To drive those cloud services revenues, CSPs are partnering up with some key cloud computing and virtualization companies. Among our survey participants, the most frequently mentioned cloud computing, cloud services and virtualization partners included:…

  • VMware, 50%
  • Citrix Systems, 39.3%
  • Google Apps, 33%
  • Cisco Systems, 30.4%
  • Microsoft Office 365, 30.4%
  • Amazon Simple Storage Service, 24.1%
  • Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, 20.5%
  • Salesforce.com, 19.6%

Channel Partners in the Cloud

Now here’s the interesting twist: The Talkin’ Cloud 100 survey attracted a mix of channel partners — from pure cloud services providers to VARs that now offer cloud solutions. Here’s a look at how participants described themselves:

  • Cloud Services Provider, 63.4%: CSPs offer SaaS (software as a service), infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and/or PaaS (platform as a service) to partners and/or customers.
  • Cloud Aggregator, 14.3%: Cloud aggregators typically offer a portal that allows VARs, MSPs and resellers to source multiple third-party cloud services for customers.
  • Cloud Builder, 33.0%: Cloud builders develop public or private clouds for their customers to ultimately run on their own.
  • Cloud Broker, 34.8%: Cloud brokers recommend and resell multiple cloud services to customers.
  • Cloud Integrator, 33.9%: Cloud integrators link multiple on-premises and cloud-based services together for customers.
  • VAR with Cloud Computing Expertise, 42%: These companies continue to generate strong business with on-premises IT projects while extending into cloud offerings.
  • MSP with Cloud Computing Expertise, 58.9%: These companies continue to remotely manage and monitor customers’ networks and applications, both on-premises and in the cloud.
  • Note: Total figures exceed 100 percent because many survey participants fit multiple categories.

Money Matters

Survey participants agreed to share specific cloud services and cloud IT project revenue figures with Talkin’ Cloud. We, in turned, used the information to build the Top 100 Cloud Services Provider list — though we agreed not to disclose each company’s specific financial information.

Take a look at this data and you’ll see that top cloud services providers (CSPs) come in all shapes and sizes. Within the Talkin’ Cloud 100 list:

  • Six companies generated at least $100 million in annual cloud services revenues in 2011.
  • 20 companies generated $20 million in annual cloud services revenues
  • 32 companies generated $10 million in annual cloud services revenues
  • 45 companies generated $5 million in annual cloud services revenues
  • 69 companies generated $2 million in annual cloud services revenues
  • 82 companies generated $1 million in annual cloud services revenues
