Cloud Computing: Condusiv To Release Server I/O Acceleration Tech

By David

Grazed from CRN.  Author: Joseph F. Kovar.

Condusiv Technologies is expanding its performance-optimization software line with a new version specifically targeting the I/O performance in physical IT infrastructures running Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT) applications.  Condusiv next week plans to release its V-locity Server optimization software, a new application designed to increase the performance of I/O-intensive applications like Microsoft’s SQL Server and Exchange running on physical servers, said Jerry Baldwin, CEO of the Burbank, Calif.-based vendor.

V-locity Server is a follow-on from Condusiv’s previous I/O accelerator, the V-locity VM, which was targeted at virtualized environments, Baldwin said. It also takes advantage of the company’s Diskeeper software for optimizing file read and write at the Windows level, he said…

Experts: The time to adopt PaaS models is now

By David

Grazed from Xtium.  Author: Editorial Staff.

Cloud computing has been around for years now, and the technology’s growth has been driven largely by the Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) sectors.

As of now, Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) adoption has lagged behind the other two. There are a few reasons for this, most notably that it simply hasn’t been around for as long as IaaS and SaaS tools. But another reason for PaaS models’ late start is that decision-makers have been waiting for the technology to mature.  Contrary to many people’s perception, that time has already arrived, according to TechTarget…

Don’t Let Your Data Blow Away: Cloud Disaster Recovery

By David

Grazed from Business2Community. Author: Lindsey Nelson.

A disaster of any kind is a fear for so many of us. Events like house fires and freak thunderstorms can take all our personal belongings and remind us that no document or treasure is safe unless one of two things is true – you happened to either buy two or make a copy, or it’s been backed up. But what if you were not only a home owner, but also the owner of a small local bank. What would happen to all your transactional data if that freak storm came through your town?

What Is Cloud Disaster Recovery?

Cloud computing is great for a lot of things, collaboration, saving your company money, and improving app development; however, it’s perfect for one thing – a data disaster recovery. According to Wikipedia, cloud backup is “a service that provides users with a system for the backup, storage, and recovery of computer files…typically built around a client software program that runs on a schedule…once a day…it typically collects, compresses, encrypts and transfers the data to the remote backup service provider’s servers or off-site hardware.”…

Why Cloud is ideal for Virtual Desktop/Desktop Replacement

By David

Grazed from MyHostNews. Author: Editorial Staff.

Cloud is ideal for Virtual Desktop/Desktop Replacement. Most people, when they first hear about it don’t realize the power of cloud computing. Imagine all your servers, running all the time with limited downtime. Imagine all the machines in your business silently connected and ticking away, ready to share data at a moment’s notice. Imagine employees being able to access their work anywhere without the use of a VPN.

Cloud offers all of that and more. When you use cloud instead of a traditional desktop, you are gaining a whole host of features that aren’t possible with a traditional model. To start, cloud computing is incredibly fast and powerful. With traditional computing, the processing load is usually on the computer itself. This can cause certain tasks, like graphical tasks or compiling code, to take a long time. When you use the cloud, all of that processing power is offloaded onto a system vastly more powerful than a regular desktop. The entire process winds up taking a much shorter time than normal…

Spanning Cloud Apps Pushes Monitoring to Mobile Devices

By David

Grazed from TalkinCloud. Author: Chris Talbot.

Spanning Cloud Apps is making it possible for administrators and trusted advisors to monitor Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) Apps domains from any iOS or Android device with the launch of its first mobile app. Audit Log for Google Apps alerts admins when changes are made to their domain settings so they can monitor their domains on the go and in real time.

Focused on providing cloud-based backup and recovery with Spanning Backup for Google Apps, the vendor tripled its funding last month to build out its direct sales team and its reseller channel. Although it has been trying to make a name for itself since its launch in 2010 as a cloud-based backup and restore service provider, Spanning also provides log management and monitoring through its Admin Audit Log Viewer, which is the technological basis for the new mobile app…

Ilesfay Awarded Second Major Cloud Computing Patent

By David

Grazed from GlobeNewswire. Author: PR Announcement.

Ilesfay(R) Technology Group, a leading provider of cloud-based data replication solutions, today announced it has received its second patent that protects and legitimizes its MatchMaking(R) technology. MatchMaking allows data to be replicated and transferred anywhere in the world 10-30 times faster than traditional methods, speeds only possible since the advent of cloud computing. The algorithm computes the most efficient way to replicate data between sites, only transferring new data in a set rather than the entire data set.

Issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office on March 26, 2013, the second patent is No. 8,407,315 and titled "Method for horizontal scale delta encoding." "We’re proud to have invented technology that’s truly unique in the marketplace," said President & CEO Chris McLennan. "One that’s helpful to so many existing and potential customers, adding value to our company at large, and providing even more upside to our investors. We expect to announce additional partnerships and customer relationships in the near future."…

Cloud Computing: Sumo Logic Introduces Hosted Collection Features for Amazon S3

By David

Grazed from TalkinCloud. Author: Chris Talbot.

Unified public and private cloud log management, monitoring and analytics are key to the acceleration of enterprise cloud deployments—at least according to Sumo Logic. The vendor has updated its log management and analytics product with new functionality that enables customers to quickly analyze logs generated by SaaS, PaaS or IaaS environments, but it also unveiled new support for Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) S3.

The update includes support for hosted collection for companies that want to store their logs directly in Amazon S3. This follows up on support for Amazon Web Services (AWS) that Sumo Logic announced last spring. At that time, the company introduced its Sumo Logic Free log management and analytics service to AWS. The new functionality really centers on new collection capabilities, which include the ability to:…

Former Yahoo Security Head Lands at Cloud Startup Box

By David

Grazed from All Things Digital. Author: Arik Hesseldahl.

Justin Somaini, the former chief information security officer at Yahoo who left that company in January, has landed a new job at high-flying cloud-computing startup Box. In an announcement set to be made later today, Somaini, whose title will be VP and chief trust officer, is one of three high-profile hires at Box that will be announced later today. The other two are Niall Wall, who will be SVP and head of business development, and Jeff Mannie, who will be VP, controller and chief accounting officer. Wall will take over for Karen Appleton, who has been promoted to senior VP in charge of global alliances.

What does the new title — chief trust officer — mean? “Two things,” Somaini told me in a brief conversation yesterday. “Really driving a trust strategy for the company around the products and services we provide and how that relates to internal functions of how we perform. Second, we have to make sure there’s a tight integration with our customer to base to really understand their needs. And it’s not only that we’re able to respond to their pain points, but that we’re able to predict them.”…

Private clouds considered a detour on the road to public cloud

By David

Grazed from TechTarget. Author: Alex Barrett.

The value of building a true private cloud is murky at best, and five years from now, the push to build private clouds may be remembered as a detour along the road to the ultimate destination: widespread use of the public cloud. In a panel discussion entitled, Building a Private Cloud: Is It Worth It?, at the Modern Infrastructure Decisions conference here last week, IT professionals with and without private clouds discussed the security, cost and management implications of building and operating a private cloud.

Implementing the private cloud on top of an existing VMware Inc. vSphere environment is a way to free up staff from doing low-level tasks, such as spinning up new servers, according to Bob Plankers, a virtualization and cloud architect for a major Midwestern university, and who runs VMware vCloud. "The cloud is about a lot of non-technical things," Plankers said. "I look at staff time spent. Are we able to take advantage of what the humans are good at?"…

Cloud keeps looking good for IBM, and flash storage could help in the months ahead

By David

Grazed from GigaOM. Author: Jordan Novet.

IBM reported $23.4 billion in revenue in the first quarter of the year, down more than 5 percent year over year, and $3.03 billion in net income, down 1.1 percent. Analysts had been expecting more than $24 billion in revenue. The company said cloud-computing revenue was up more than 70 percent year over year in the first quarter of 2013, following an 80 percent revenue gain in the previous quarter.

Revenue from software-as-a-Service (SaaS) products, including Tivoli software, were up 65 percent, Mark Loughridge, senior vice president and chief financial officer for finance and enterprise transformation, said during a Thursday call with investors. Revenue coming from enterprises setting up their own private cloud with IBM Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) offerings was up “more than 75 percent,” Loughridge told investors…
