Meet Windows Server’s BYOD features

By David

Grazed from ComputerWorld. AuthorL Jonathan Hassell.

Microsoft execs are fond of the term "people-centric IT" — it’s their way of saying that workers are using whatever devices they want to, and are using them at home, on the train, in a hotel, on the beach, while skiing…. You get the idea. But IT needs a way to at least make sure this explosion of user choice does not put corporate data at risk.

Four of the features in Windows Server 2012 R2 are meant to bridge the gap between yesterday’s world, where users have a corporate-issued laptop and a BlackBerry, and today’s new BYOD environment, where users bring their own phones to work, use their personal tablets, work from a variety of locations and generally have a varied approach to how they engage with computer resources…

By David

Grazed from CloudPro. Author: Jane McCallion.

Microsoft has fired up its anti-Google campaign again, this time taking aim at the search giant’s document creation and collaboration Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offering, Google Docs. In a new advert, Microsoft urges customers – both potential and actual – not to “gamble with Google Docs”, claiming the service is unable to conserve formatting from Office documents.

Google Docs is presented as a disreputable croupier in a casino who will give the gambler a dice key ring, if he is able to retain the original formatting from a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation. If not, the croupier will take the gambler’s wallet, credibility and chances of a job promotion. Despite the advice of his friend, the gambler decides to take the bet and the advert ends with him losing then passing out…

Cloud Computing: Consolidating Big Data

By David

Grazed from Sys Con Media.  Author: Stefan Bernbo.

Cloud computing has opened the doors to a vast array of online services. With the emergence of new cloud technologies, both public and private companies are seeing increases in performance gains, elasticity and convenience. However, maintaining a competitive advantage has become increasingly difficult. Service providers are taking a closer look at their data storage infrastructure for ways to improve performance and cut costs.

If the status quo remains, maintaining low-cost cloud services will become increasingly difficult. Service providers will incur higher costs, while consumers become burdened with storage capacity restrictions. Such obstacles are influencing service providers to find new ways to scale cost-effectively and increase performance in the data center…

Dot-cloud boom? IT hiring strongest since June 1998

By David

Grazed from ZDNet.  Author: Joe McKendrick.

The folks at Dice.com just sent out this memo:  In the month of July, 3,600 jobs were created in data processing, hosting and related events, according to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics report.  That’s the single best month of job growth in this category since June 1998.

While the BLS numbers don’t dissect the IT jobs in terms of specialty, Dice says its own numbers show growth in the "cloud" category. As the online tech job placement service put it: "Cloud service providers report in this category and their services appear to be increasingly in demand. The number of jobs posted on Dice containing the word ‘cloud’ hit an all-time high in August and account for six percent of all job postings."…

Dell Cloud Client Computing today announced the release of version 6 of Dell Wyse WSM desktop and application virtualization software. This new release adds server streaming capability to help organizations harness the benefits of virtualization and cloud computing, while simplifying management and deployment processes and helping to reduce costs. By adding on-demand delivery of server OS images to Dell’s reliable and secure end-user computing portfolio, Dell Wyse WSM 6 offers another powerful computing alternative that helps organizations quickly stand up new servers where and when needed, and gives employees and students secured access to content regardless of location.

Dell Wyse WSM delivers operating systems and applications separately to stateless, diskless clients on demand, providing a manageable, reliable and scalable PC computing experience from the cloud. Unlike traditional VDI, Dell Wyse WSM enables the desktop OS and applications to execute locally on the client, giving that client the same look, performance, feel and function of a traditional desktop PC, but storing all OS, applications, and data in the datacenter…

Nokia Siemens Makes Strides in ‘Telco Cloud’

By David

Grazed from BillingWorld.  Author: Craig Galbraith.

Nokia Siemens Networks says its comprehensive testing of mobile voice core services running in the "Telco Cloud" shows that its cloud technology is on the brink of commercial deployment.  The testing involved what NSN says is "an exhaustive set of use cases" that covered voice over LTE (VoLTE) and other IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)-based services in the Telco Cloud.

During 2012, Nokia Siemens Networks demonstrated the reliability of core virtualization in several “proof of concept" projects. These projects provided the technology foundation for core network element software running on top of a virtualized infrastructure. In addition, NSN says the projects helped identify telco-specific requirements for cloud computing…

Cloud Computing: Logicalis US Calls Converged Storage a Catapult for Virtualization

By David

Grazed from PRWeb. Author: PR Announcement.

Analysts estimate that more than 2.2 million terabytes (or 2.2 exabytes) of data are created every day, and its all got to be stored somewhere. Clearly, this is a new world for IT, and legacy storage systems just aren’t cutting it; paying for dependable storage is costing many organizations as much as 20 percent of their annual IT budgets and is holding back efforts to extend virtualization and leverage advances in converged infrastructure and cloud computing. To help IT pros explore the ways they can move their storage systems down a converged infrastructure path,Logicalis US, an international IT solutions and managed services provider, has created a free, downloadable white paper, Storage for Converged Infrastructures, available here.

Storage has become such a key component of a converged infrastructure that the choice of storage systems is replacing servers as a driver of platform choices for IT departments, says Logicalis Vice President of HP Solutions Brandon Harris. The decision that organizations make about storage today is the linchpin to what their overall converged infrastructure is going to be tomorrow…
