IBM wants your cloudy dollars – and it’s making an extremely aggressive play to be the market leader in enterprise cloud computing. In some minds, however, it already is. Exhibit A: chief executive Virginia Rometty, in an open letter to investors published as part of the company’s 2013 annual report, spelled it out: “IBM today is the leader in enterprise cloud.”

The reason? Investment. Big Blue has shelled out $7bn on 15 acquisitions, with Rometty singling out the purchase of IaaS provider SoftLayer above all else. The latest move was earlier in March, when the company announced it was to push $1bn of resources and investments into cloud, rolling out SoftLayer in new geographies and providing a developer-friendly PaaS offering called BlueMix…

Huawei Technologies is looking to clock US$10 billion revenue from its enterprise business and has high hopes cloud will help lead the way. The Chinese networking equipment vendor said its enterprise unit was targeting to hit US$10 billion by 2017 by securing contracts in cloud hosting and networks, reported Bloomberg.

This business division chalked up US$2.5 billion in revenue last year, climbing 32 percent, and would register a higher growth rate in 2014, said William Xu, who leads the business unit, at this week’s CeBIT show in Hanover, Germany. Shenzhen-based Huawei faces stiff competition from U.S. networking giant and current market leader, Cisco Systems, but the Chinese vendor is seeing bigger growth in the U.S. market…

The rise of public cloud services has led to a widening market. While it is still dominated by several major vendors, even startup firms and tech giants late to the party can gain traction with midsize businesses that wish to leverage scalable computing resources. Increased competition and improved infrastructure, however, have spawned a secondary trend: Multicloud public deployments. IT professionals are no longer content to stand under a single data umbrella; they are opting instead for part-and-parcel clouds that meet specific needs on demand.

A March 6 InfoWorld article talks about the multicloud trend, which is driven in large part by the demands of consumers for interoperable cloud computing technologies, no matter their underlying infrastructure. The piece points to specific examples of companies using several clouds to achieve performance objectives; applications and back-end management are handled by different cloud services…

VMware has launched a Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS), VMware Horizon, hosted on VMware’s public cloud server. For rates as low at $35 a month, businesses can use this DaaS to load and operate Microsoft operating systems, such as Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8 on desktop and laptop computers or mobile devices.

Businesses can manage and monitors all of their employees running an operating system through VMware Horizon. IT departments can create their own virtual desktops with gold pattern images provided by VMware. They can also ensure secure connectivity by integrating virtual desktops into their Active Directory environment. Amazon Web Services also has plans to launch a DaaS with prices at $35 a month, but so far it is only available as a limited preview…
