Multicloud Public Deployments: The New Standard?

The rise of public cloud services has led to a widening market. While it is still dominated by several major vendors, even startup firms and tech giants late to the party can gain traction with midsize businesses that wish to leverage scalable computing resources. Increased competition and improved infrastructure, however, have spawned a secondary trend: Multicloud public deployments. IT professionals are no longer content to stand under a single data umbrella; they are opting instead for part-and-parcel clouds that meet specific needs on demand.
No Longer an Exception?
A March 6 InfoWorld article talks about the multicloud trend, which is driven in large part by the demands of consumers for interoperable cloud computing technologies, no matter their underlying infrastructure. The piece points to specific examples of companies using several clouds to achieve performance objectives; applications and back-end management are handled by different cloud services…
Why? Although cloud deployments have helped level the playing field, technology companies still play to their strengths, which means that they cannot all do everything equally well. Instead of seeking a single ideal cloud provider, companies look for specific areas of excellence. In addition to multicloud tenant deployments, there has been a rise in open source, especially at the core of cloud deployments. While providers will continue creating fully supported, for-pay alternatives, most now start with open source kernels. The result?
