When Ingram Micro Inc. took the wraps off its latest cloud services offerings this month, partners on both sides of the distribution equation paused to consider the ramifications. Distributors like Ingram long ago shucked off the middleman mantle and moved toward a greater role in services that broaden and deepen the capabilities of channel solution providers.

Whenever an item becomes commonplace (some might use the word “commoditized”) we see marketplaces and brokerages rise up to make money from this commoditization. Cloud computing is an area in which brokerages have been long talked about (ever since vendor Enomaly launched its ultimately ill-fated, but arguably prescient marketplace SpotCloud many years ago).

The theory behind these cloud brokers is that they allow the relationship between vendor and customer to be optimized such that better outcomes are delivered for both parties. Or that’s the theory at least – it’s fair to say that brokerages haven’t really taken off. True, the Deutsche Boerse did launch a cloud exchange platform, the so called Cloud Exchange AG but for whatever reason, the concept has never really taken off…

Many healthcare organizations migrating information systems to a cloud-hosted service struggle developing an appropriate strategy for the task, says Ed King, managing director of healthcare consulting services at disaster recovery and cloud-hosting vendor Sungard Availability Services. The Wayne, Pa.-based company split from software and processing services vendor SunGard in March and became an independent entity.

Moving to the cloud is not just a new way of doing computing-on-demand; it’s also a new way for personnel in an organization to use the technology. Almost always, not every system moves to the cloud, particularly legacy systems, King notes. There are a growing number of electronic health records systems and newer ancillary products being cloud-hosted by a remote vendor, while older secondary systems–back-office, financial, pharmacy and laboratory, for instance–may tie to cloud-based systems but remain in-house…

Databerry, a Boca Raton-based web marketing and cloud computing provider, has weighed in on Google’s recent decision to slash prices across the board on its cloud computing services. In late March at an event near its San Francisco headquarters, Google announced that it would be making huge drops in its pricing model for a variety of cloud services. Google Compute Engine, a virtual computer service offering users raw computing power, will see a price drop of 32 percent.

The Google App Engine, a similar service, will have its pricing reduced in kind. Google Cloud Storage, the company’s cloud hosting and storage platform, will be 68 percent cheaper, with Google BigQuery, a well loved analysis tool for mass data, receiving the biggest cut of 85 percent…

Big Blue has had managed disaster recovery services for years, but is now looking to extend them to its infrastructure as a service customers on SoftLayer. Shlomo Kramer, the Israeli entrepreneur who made his name by co-founding the world’s second-largest security networks maker, is seeing investor support vanish for his latest cyber venture.  Imperva Inc, the Redwood Shores, California-based company that builds security systems for data centers, sank 44 per cent last week after scaling back its first-quarter revenue growth outlook to a third of its previous forecast.

Almost all of the declines came in a single day, April 10. The rout erased US$584 million (RM1.9 billion) of market value and sent the stock to a 20-month low.  Imperva, one of six Israeli online-security firms that Kramer has founded or financially backed over the past two decades, is facing growing competition from global powerhouses including International Business Machines Corp and F5 Networks Inc, Kramer, who is also the chief executive officer of Imperva, said the company missed its sales projection as competition for larger deals delayed orders, according to an April 9 statement…
