Microsoft Corp said it will increase its cloud storage offering for business users by 40-fold as the world’s largest software company makes a case for businesses buying an all-in-one product from itself rather than buying technology "piecemeal" from multiple sellers. "The era of making isolated, single-solution decisions is rapidly coming to a close," wrote John Case, corporate vice president of Microsoft Office Division.

Microsoft on Monday raised its OneDrive for Business storage to 1TB per user from 25GB. Microsoft’s pitch to be the one-stop destination for companies looking to buy technology runs against efforts by smaller rivals such as Box and Dropbox that offer one or two specialized services…

IT “infrastructure matters in the new era of computing,” IBM managers argued in the formal launching of its Power Systems servers based on its Power8 processor, taking aim at big data applications and cloud computing. IBM engineers also announced a Power8 interface advance designed to put accelerators closer to the processor. IBM is touting the Power Systems platform as the first to specifically address big data analytics and cloud computing economics.

Doug Balog, general manager of IBM’s Power Systems division, said the company has invested $1 billion over the last year in Linux-based Power Systems development to ease, among other things, the porting of applications from X86 to Power platforms. The Power8 systems are the culmination of three years and $2.4 billion in investments that IBM has made in chip design and manufacturing, systems design, and system software development…

Governments are set to spend proportionally more on cloud computing than private industries as expenditure is predicted to increase 35% year-on-year until 2018. The UK government’s annual budget for cloud services will grow by 35.6% year-on-year over the next four years, according to the latest statistics released exclusively to CBR by research firm Kable.

That outlay is 4.5% more than the combined predicted cloud spend of Britain’s financial, pharmaceutical, manufacturing and insurance industries. Kable also pegs the UK government to lead international public sector spend on cloud, ahead of the US (34.7% year-on-year), Denmark (30.5%), and Canada (30.1%), hitting $8.4bn by 2018…
