Raleigh-based Red Hat is making another move to embrace cloud computing – in particular OpenStack – by acquiring Inktank Ceph Enterprise in a deal worth $175 million. Red Hat (NYSE: RHT) is paying cash for the company. The deal was announced early Wednesday.

"We’re thrilled to welcome Inktank to the Red Hat family," said Brian Stevens, chief technology officer at Red Hat, in the deal announcement, "They have built an incredibly vibrant community that will continue to be nurtured as we work together to make open the de facto choice for software-defined storage. Inktank has done a brilliant job assembling a strong ecosystem around Ceph and we look forward to expanding on this success together. Computing giant Hewlett-Packard and Foxconn, one of the world’s biggest manufacturers of computers and other electronics, will today announce a joint venture to manufacture a new line of servers aimed at filling the data centers of cloud computing companies like Google, Amazon, Facebook and others.

In what the companies are describing as a “strategic commercial agreement,” the two say they will build a new line of servers intended for the data centers of large Internet companies, a segment of the market often referred to as the hyperscale business. It’s a portion of the server market that the research firm IDC reckons will grow at a compound annual rate of 15 to 20 percent between now and 2018…

I recently had the privilege of talking with Troy Rice, owner of cloud services provider (CSP) See The Matrix (STM). Unlike many IT service providers that migrate to managed services and then to cloud services, STM jumped right over the managed services phase and went right to the cloud eight years ago. Although the company has enjoyed healthy revenue growth over the past six years (19% average year-over-year growth), Rice was humble about his foresight to move to the cloud so early on.

“In hindsight, it wasn’t so much that we were trying to skip over traditional managed services – we actually did try selling it for a brief period – but the tools were so bad back then that it felt dishonest charging customers for this service,” said Rice. “Hosting IT assets in our data center gave us more control over the process and enabled us to scale our business without having to add a lot of employees.”…

The value of the cloud services market in India is expected to hit a record high of over $556 million by the end of 2014. Growth for the year is projected at 32.2%, which will see India’s cloud sector rise from $421 million in 2013 to $556.8 this year, an increase of $135.8 million. This rapid rate of increase is expected to hold for the next few years, and by 2018, the Indian cloud services market could hit a staggering $1.7 billion in total worth.

The information comes from Gartner, a technology research firm based in Stamford, Connecticut. Their numbers also indicate that Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) will experience a large amount of growth in India, growing from $58 million last year to $78 million this year (a difference of $20 million, or 34.5%)…
