Dell plans to launch a public cloud computing service later this year as it seeks to expand its software and services revenue to combat shrinking profit margins from its PC business.

However, while the company strives to emulate rivals HP, IBM and Oracle in becoming a one-stop shop for business buyers looking for either on-premise or cloud-based application and infrastructure systems, analysts question whether Dell has the datacentre capacity for the job, especially in Europe, and the extent to which it will rely on partnerships to mask the gaps in its portfolio…

vCompute announced today it has successfully negotiated a new partnership with Quasar data center to provide cloud computing and high performance computing services. "This facility is a key component for cloud efforts and the additional complex computing services our clients require. The Quasar center will also allow vCompute to deploy a high security development lab for software companies that need to perform benchmarking and scalability testing," commented Edward Hawes, CEO of vCompute This facility is the third compute center vCompute has deployed in Houston and a fourth is planned for San Diego CA. to accommodate defense efforts.

The Quasar and vCompute partnership will concentrate on providing private cloud services and server farms to clients locally and abroad. "Our clients have requirements for increased compute capacity but do not want to expand their internal centers, or add more staff and infrastructure," continued Hawes…

NEXT month’s Dublin Web Summit has received a boost with the confirmation that one of the driving forces behind cloud computing has been added to the speakers’ list.

Amazon’s chief technology officer Dr Werner Vogels, who is also known as one of the fathers of cloud computing will address the summit’s "Beyond The Cloud" event.

Dr Vogels has pushed the cloud as an additional revenue stream for Amazon and has become known as a "cloud evangelist"…

Enterprise cloud computing company Salesforce.com extended its Social Enterprise Platform, that includes Force.com, Heroku and Database.com, to enable more users to its cloud. Salesforce.com made this announcement at the DreamForce 2011 event.

The new features, including the general availability of Database.com, Heroku for Java and new social and mobile capabilities on Force.com – gives companies additional paths to becoming social enterprises through the development of social, mobile and open apps, says the company in a release…

In May, Google announced that it would alter the price of its cloud computing service App Engine, the company’s Platform as a Service offering, later in the year, presumably in an effort to turn the product into another profit centre for the company. Google has now announced that the price changes will occur in the second half of September, at the same time as the product officially loses its "preview" tag. Google has provided a tool that lets existing users calculate how much they’ll pay under the new service…

The rise of cloud computing need not mean that in-house IT staff become redundant, it has been claimed.

According to Microsoft cloud evangelist Simon May, the skills needed by tech workers will change, but they will not become redundant.

He commented that IT professionals are "really, really intelligent" individuals, who continue to add value to UK organisations….
