The cost of computing has declined enormously. In 1970, you could buy 10 calculations per second for US$ 1000. In 2010, you could buy 10 billion calculations per second for the same US$ 1000. In 1970, there were approximately 31,744 terabytes (TB) of data on computerized records — remember, today you can buy a 4 TB external hard drive. In 2010, that number was 1.4 billion TB. In 2015, it’s predicted that mobile devices alone will generate 6.3 exabytes of data — that’s 6.6 million TB. The total amount of data will grow 50 times in the next 8 years…

Previous CEO and company co-founder David Link will remain as chairman of the board. Smaller companies in the Irish economy are attributing job creation directly to the adoption of cloud computing and 35pc of firms have implemented cloud, according to the inaugural Microsoft/Amarach cloud index as part of the brouhaha surrounding Cloud Week.

The survey of 151 organisations, including large, mid and small-sized firms, found that just less than two-fifths – 37pc – had implemented cloud computing.

This rises to more than half (53pc) of the large organisations in Ireland that employ more than 250 people.

The majority of public and private-sector organisations, however, have yet to deploy cloud technology…
