A few weeks ago, a school administrator shared a story about how he tried to block Google’s chat feature, but his students created a workaround. They opened up a new Google Doc, shared it with friends, and used the sidebar chat to talk with each other.

Although the behavior was worrisome to the administrator, it was hard not to be impressed at how cleverly these 7th graders interacted with the software. These students literally grew up on Google’s products, and that’s largely thanks to Google…

Patients find "cloud" technology a faster, more efficient way to store and distribute their medical images than current options, according to the preliminary findings of an image sharing project led by The Mount Sinai Medical Center in conjunction with four other academic medical institutions. The Phase I results of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Image Share project are being presented today at the American Roentgen Ray Society Annual Meeting in Vancouver, Canada.

Mount Sinai was the first site to go live in August 2011 and currently has about 190 patients enrolled in project. A total of about 600 patients are participating in all sites, which also include University of California – San Francisco, University of Chicago Medical Center, Mayo Clinic, and the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore…

Microsoft and Barnes & Noble have struck a strategic deal that will end their patent litigation and put the substantial Barnes & Noble e-book library including college textbooks on Windows 8.  Microsoft is investing $300 million in a new Barnes & Noble subsidiary that is called Newco for the moment and is valued at $1.7 billion.

Microsoft will have 17.6% of the unit, which may or may not be spun off.

Barnes & Noble will pay Microsoft an unsung royalty for a patent-settling license that covers its Nook e-readers, which are based on a forked version of Android…

Opponents of CISPA [1] such as the ACLU have focused almost exclusively on the bill’s potential impact on individual user’s privacy, and understandably so.  But a close read of CISPA’s broad language [2] reveals that Joe Internet’s privacy isn’t all that would be in jeopardy if the bill makes it through the Senate and past President Obama’s veto pen. CISPA poses a threat to the privacy of entire organizations, from nonprofits and small business on up to the enterprise — and even to the very future of cloud computing.

Drawing from the bill’s exact language, CISPA would permit "certified entities" and "cyber security providers"  to "voluntarily" share any customer data with other certified entities, so long as the data constitutes "cyber threat intelligence" for "cyber security purposes" — as well as for the sake of "national security."…

Executive-level security officers at some of the largest global companies have identified four main concerns for 2012: mobile device security, identity management for cloud computing, threat management and profiling, and increasing regulatory pressures. These insights were revealed on April 23 at an executive advisory meeting for Stonesoft, an innovative provider of integrated network security, next generation firewalls, and business continuity solutions based in Helsinki.
