Compuware Corp. is responding to the surge in mobility, cloud computing, Big Data and networking with upgrades to its dynaTrace and Gomez application performance management (APM) tools.

The updates, announced this week, will affect how customers build and deploy applications, says Steve Tack, CTO of Compuware’s APM business unit. "Customers are working a lot more with native mobile applications … as well as the sheer proliferation of different browser types and a global base of customers, partners and employees," he says. "They’ve lost the insight into the relationship between performance and user behavior."…

Cloud computing is a recent shift, that is occurring in the IT industry where more and more IT functions are transferred to remote servers, which are held by third parties. The development of the cloud is strongly related to the generalization of broadband internet, since to have an acceptable user experience, a high speed of data exchange between local machine and server is mandatory. Cloud gaming is just the part of the cloud that is related to the video game industry. Two pioneers in the field of cloud gaming are Onlive and Gaikai, both privately held. These two companies allow any person to connect to their servers and play the games that they have in store. The benefits of such services are obvious: people having cheap netbooks or old notebooks/PCs that cannot handle the graphics of more recent games, just need a high speed connection to play. No need to invest in expansive hardware and no need to buy discs or spend hours downloading the game. You only need high speed internet, and a credit card. Another advantage of cloud gaming is platform independence as for example you can play on your android or iOS powered tablet plenty of PC/console games…

The cloud may be the latest and greatest computing technology to come along, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t subject to the same laws of logic and nature that govern the rest of the universe.

And one of those laws is that there is a right way and a wrong way to perform every task, or, judging by my own personal experiences, there is an infinite number of wrong ways and only one right way.

To apply this thinking to the cloud, it’s important to take stock of what the cloud is and is not. And according to OpSource CEO Treb Ryan, one of the first mistakes most CIOs make is in thinking that the cloud is merely an extension of existing infrastructure. In fact, the cloud is an entirely new, and unique, data environment that will ultimately drive its own set of applications and business models. Failure to recognize this new paradigm increases the risk that the cloud infrastructure being deployed today will be mostly useless as the technology unfolds over the next decade…

Along with "cloud computing," the term "big data" has become the buzzword of buzzwords on Wall Street. Though there are many who will jump at the chance to offer an opinion on the new craze, there are very few analysts that can describe what the concept really means — much less appreciate its real potential.

How can Wall Street truly forecast with any degree of accuracy the companies that are positioned to capitalize on this transition?

In that endeavor — what Wayne Gretzky would describe "skating to where the puck is going" — Wall Street has steadily focused on a handful of names that include some current titans such as Salesforce.com(CRM), EMC(EMC), and Juniper(JNPR). These are indeed qualified companies with undeniable expertise in this area. However, analysts continue to discount the value of database giant Oracle(ORCL), a pioneer that stands to profit not only in cloud technologies, but in analytics – its only competition in the latter coming from IBM(IBM) and SAP(SAP)…

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) see the ability to work in a flexible and mobile way as the biggest advantage of adopting cloud technology, research shows.

In a recent IBM study, 39 per cent of senior managers said that a more adaptable and flexible workforce was their number one reason for implementing cloud computing in the workplace, followed by the cost efficiency of this type of service.

This can be largely attributed to the increasing proliferation of smart mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, so that the workplace no longer needs to be defined as a static, physical place…

The federal government, like the private sector, sees great opportunities in moving its IT infrastructure in the cloud. A 2011 white paper by then-Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra estimated that $20 billion of the government’s $80 billion in annual IT spending could move to the cloud. A study by the MeriTalk Cloud Computing Exchange estimates that the government could save $12 billion a year through greater use of cloud services, which promote efficiency through elimination of duplication and higher utilization of equipment. But the reality is that because of complex regulations, especially those covering security and procurement, that move will be slow and painful.

Cloud computing is often a vague concept, but the feds at least have a precise definition to work with. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology, it is "a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e g , networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction."…
