In an article on MIT Technology Review, it was reported that Hewlett-Packard Company is gearing up to make a big leap in 2015. The PC giant will launch a new computer called “The Machine” which will have a new Operating System in it designed by Hewlett-Packard Company. The Machine will be more energy efficient, powerful, Cloud based, Big Data supportive and will have a bundle of high-performance computing features. Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ) business is in trouble and the company is desperately looking to seize some key deals and products in the Cloud and computing domains.

The article quoted a Hewlett-Packard Company’s executive who said that HP is heavily focusing on innovating the memory management in the modern computers. The machine will resurrect the concept of multi-lapsed memory in order to revolutionize the computing industry…

At the beginning of a new year, it’s traditional to look back over the last 12 months. But as far as this column is concerned, it’s easy to summarise what happened then: open source has won. Let’s take it from the top:

Supercomputers. Linux is so dominant on the Top 500 Supercomputers lists it is almost embarrassing. The November 2014 figures show that 485 of the top 500 systems were running some form of Linux; Windows runs on just one. Things are even more impressive if you look at the numbers of cores involved. Here, Linux is to be found on 22,851,693 of them, while Windows is on just 30,720; what that means is that not only does Linux dominate, it is particularly strong on the bigger systems…

With 2015 all but arrived, it’s natural for technology experts to offer their predictions for the new year. Oftentimes, these take the form of optimistic forecasts of the new advancements on the horizon. However, sometimes industry professionals acknowledge that the coming months will have their fair share of challenges.

The realm of cloud computing security is a case in point. Writing for InfoWorld, David Linthicum recently highlighted three cloud computing predictions that he would like to see come to fruition in 2015 but which are not likely to reach this point. Much has been said throughout 2014 about the Internet-of-Things(IoT) becoming a significant growth area for telecom operators. While M2M connectivity leverages on both wireless and fiber connectivity to power all the IoT end devices and their connectivity to the cloud, what is going to becoming a bigger business area for service providers is the cloud-based services comprising IoT platforms, data storage and computing services.

All the data that IoT end devices will be collecting will ultimately be stored in huge data lakes, and because there will be huge amounts of unstructured data, providers of IoT/M2M services will require extensive big data capabilities which include the ability to process the data in real time, produce analytics, integrate the processed data to other third party clouds which will then push the data to end-user applications while at the same time, being able to ensure the privacy, security and timeliness of the data and the processes…

In tech, 2015 will be big for: wearables, cloud computing, the Internet of Things and, alas, cybersecurity problems.  The year kicks off with the giant International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas where wearable devices — from smartwatches and activity trackers to body-worn cameras and computer glasses — will be a major focus.

The four-day conference starts Tuesday. But one much-anticipated wearable will not be at the show, Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) Apple Watch.
The Apple Watch, unveiled by Apple CEO Tim Cook at an October event, is slated for release in early 2015…

The tech industry has a habit of getting ahead of itself.  An idea comes along, investors talk it up, the media catches wind…suddenly, the thing is plastered on every front page and home page, ink on the patent application still drying. Before you can mutter the word ‘disruptive,’ though, doubt slowly creeps in, backlashers begin their backlash, and the bubble is burst.

The people at Gartner, a Connecticut-based research and consulting firm, spend a lot of their time thinking about that cycle. They put out a chart each year, in fact, called the Hype Cycle, that tries to measure what stage different technologies are in, and how fast they’ll move through those stages…

Perhaps nothing in information technology offers a richer mix of expectation and disillusionment than the mobile enterprise. It’s become like the lover who keeps promising a long-term relationship but never commits.

Since workers became enamored with smartphones eight years ago, it has seemed obvious those devices will one day connect with the applications and data within the company’s fire-walled network. And that will happen. It just didn’t happen in 2014…
