Oracle (NYSE:ORCL), a major player in the database software arena, recently decided to gird up its loins and muscle its way into cloud computing. Oracle calls its venture Elastic Computing because, ostensibly, it will offer efficient infrastructure (IaaS) capable of handling anything an enterprise might want to build or run. Translation: Oracle is throwing down the gauntlet and challenging Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) Web Services for supremacy.

The problem is that Oracle is late to the party. Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Azure and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) arrived ahead of Oracle. And Amazon is the acknowledged heavyweight champion in cloud computing. Amazon got to the party early and already dominates Infrastructure-as-a-Cloud. In other words, Oracle’s late arrival to a very competitive field may prove difficult…

Amazon’s “Amazon Web Services” (AWS) and Microsoft’s Azure are in a global land grab, according to cloud expert Adrian Cockcroft. He spoke at the annual Structure Conference last week, shared a tightly focused “state of the cloud” presentation, where he expressed that the tech and investor community is likely underestimating the potential of the AWS offering.

Sitting in the audience with my media pass, I listened attentively, as did 600 others, to Cockcroft’s current assessment and predictions of what’s to come for cloud computing. “Amazon could be growing even faster than current analyst projections of 80% per year,” Cockcroft said. With the striking down of the Safe Harbor agreement in October, we have seen the tip of a data privacy iceberg whose global implications will play out well into the new year. In 2016, U.S. businesses can expect a regulatory domino effect that will occur region by region, as more governments will take steps to protect citizen data, preserve national security interests, and build legal fences to protect local businesses.

Google Compute Engine went down for approximately 70 minutes last week, the company has confirmed, making certain Internet destinations unreachable from the europe-west1 region during that time. The issue first came to light at 1326 PST on November 23 with a status update, before a further missive at 1432 confirming the problems should have been resolved.

Four days later, Google explained what exactly went wrong. At 1151 PST on November 23, Google engineers activated a new peering link – with an unnamed provider who Google says it works with extensively – but during the activation, the providers’ estimations of how much capacity the link could take differed wildly from actual performance…
