Cloud Computing shifts may rearrange pecking order for Intel, Qualcomm, AMD, Nvidia, chipmakers

Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, big data and the Internet of things along with a heavy dose of mobility are rewriting the semiconductor pecking order. This shakeout is going to be fun to watch. In this new world order, novel workloads (think AI) are forcing customers to design their own processors. Dominant companies (think Intel) may become less dominant. ARM meets the data center.

GigaSpaces Plans Spinoff of Cloudify Division to Focus on Enterprise Hybrid Cloud Management and Network Orchestration

GigaSpaces Technologies announced today that it will spin off Cloudify, its orchestration and cloud management platform business unit, into a new company focused on the fast-growing market for management and orchestration of cloud applications and network functions virtualization (NFV).

Planning for the move began in 2016, driven by strong growth of the Cloudify product line in core enterprise cloud markets, as well as success in entering the carrier network orchestration market. It allows the new Cloudify entity to dedicate engineering, product development, marketing and customer support activities to the cloud market segment. GigaSpaces, with its long-standing track record in the in-memory computing market, will continue to capitalize on its technology investments and innovation in its XAP and InsightEdge product lines.

Microsoft joins Cloud Native Computing Foundation

I’m excited to share that we have just joined the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) as a Platinum member. CNCF is a part of the Linux Foundation, which helps govern for a wide range of cloud-oriented open source projects, such as Kubernetes, Prometheus, OpenTracing, Fluentd, Linkerd, containerd, Helm, gRPC, and many others. Since we joined the Linux Foundation last year, and now have decided to expand that relationship to CNCF membership as a natural next step to invest in open source communities and code at multiple levels, especially in the area of containers. Some specific examples include:

* Kubernetes: Microsoft has been contributing code to the Kubernetes project, as well as running Kubernetes as part of the Azure Container Service. Engineering manager and architect Brendan Burns is one of the Kubernetes project maintainers.

* Helm: The Helm project was started by Deis before being acquired by Microsoft and continues to be developed and improved by Microsoft engineers. Adam Reese, Michelle Noorali, and Matt Butcher are all project maintainers…

Packet Launches Edge Compute Service to Power Distributed Workloads

Packet, the leading bare metal cloud for developers, today launched a new Edge Compute service with 11 additional global locations and a dynamic spot-market based pricing feature. The service expands upon Packet’s existing bare metal cloud and is targeted at latency specific workloads and software innovators that require global access to un-opinionated infrastructure without the use of virtualization or multi-tenancy.

New locations include Los Angeles, Seattle, Dallas, Chicago, Ashburn, Atlanta, Toronto, Frankfurt, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Sydney – with Paris, London, Sao Paulo, and Mumbai coming online by October. This expands upon Packet’s existing footprints in New York Metro, Sunnyvale, Amsterdam, and Tokyo.

The new Edge Compute locations feature a single powerful server configuration – a “Type 1E” instance based on an Intel SkyLake processor – as well as Packet’s full networking and infrastructure automation suite. Instances are deployable within minutes via API, standard DevOps tools or the Packet portal, and take advantage of a new spot market feature for demand-driven pricing. Customers can leverage their own IP space, deploy global anycast networks and build custom Layer 2 or SD-WAN networks across Packet’s scalable transit and transport network.
