Now that Java 7 SE (Standard Edition) has officially been released, Oracle and members of the JCP (Java Community Process) have started mulling over what features to include in the next version of the programming language, Java SE 8. On the agenda for this new release: engineering Java for the cloud.

"Java 8 is supposed to set the scene for the cloud, for a wider deployment arena," said Mark Little, senior director of engineering for Red Hat’s middleware business, as well as Red Hat’s primary liaison for the JCP. Oracle left out many of the advanced features planned for Java 7 in order not to further delay the release, he noted. Those releases may very well be included in Java 8…

Hewlett Packard (HP) is investing some US$1 billion (RM2.97 billion) to set up at least six commercial data centres to offer cloud computing services in the Asia Pacific region this year.

HP Enterprise Services chief technology officer for Asia Pacific and Japan, Bradden Wondra said the company has identified six locations for the data centres, namely in Japan, China, India, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand…

Amazon Web Services will introduce new capabilities for enterprises on Thursday, including identity federation and support for private network connections to AWS.

Its new Direct Connect service allows enterprises to establish a direct connection to Amazon from their data center or colocation provider. They’ll be able to run a private line to one of several Direct Connect locations planned around the world, starting with one operated by Equinix in Virginia. Mobile developers see the heated competition between Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems reshaping the markets for cloud computing, enterprise IT, and social networking. Industry analysts, however, aren’t quite ready to count Microsoft out.

A Q3 2011 survey of more than 2,000 mobile developers, conducted by cross-platform development toolmaker Appcelerator and research firm IDC, finds developers divided about whether iOS or Android will come to dominate the mobile enterprise market. Some 44% of respondents sided with Apple while another 44% sided with Google when asked which OS would prevail in the enterprise market. The chance of other operating systems becoming relevant to enterprises was deemed to be small: 7% said they believed Windows Phone 7 would emerge ahead, 4% bet on BlackBerry, and just 2% foresee webOS triumphant…
