The new federal strategy for implementing cloud-computing solutions is called “Cloud First”— and with good reason. We now systematically prefer cloud-computing solutions to those based on local servers and laptops. The allure of efficiencies, economies of scale, high-end services and — most importantly — reduced costs are almost irresistible.

But, as American governments at the federal, state and local levels rush headlong toward cloud computing, wouldn’t it be wise to pause and ask, “What’s at stake?”…

Cloud storage arrays to generate $1.45B in 2015

Worldwide revenue from vendors selling external disk storage subsystems for cloud-based systems will grow from $267.4 million this year to $1.45 billion in 2015, according to Gartner.

In a recently released research report, Gartner said companies selling private and/or public cloud storage have seen annual revenue grow some 56% to date this year compared to 2010…

Red Hat to Buy Gluster for $136 Million Expanding in Cloud Computing

Red Hat Inc. (RHT), a provider of open source software and services, agreed to acquire closely held Gluster Inc. for about $136 million in cash to expand in Internet-based computing.

Red Hat’s third-quarter and full-year fiscal 2012 earnings forecast aren’t changed by the deal, the Raleigh, North Carolina-based company said in a statement today. Integrating Gluster may make Red Hat’s fiscal 2013 operating margin excluding some items 150 basis points lower than fiscal 2012…
