Grazed from Campus Technology.  Author: Jennifer Skelly.

In the broader debate about the opportunities–and challenges–presented by cloud computing in higher education, its potential within the classroom has largely been overlooked. Cloud-based LMS solutions have created some ripples, but even then the focus has largely been on the enterprise side. Hiding in the cloud, however, are some terrific classroom tools that faculty can use to engage students and improve learning…

Misleading, over reaching catch phrases abound in the cloud computing and virtualization markets

By David
Grazed from ZDNet.  Author: Dan Kusnetzky.

Over the years, I’ve watched several attempts to brand products with a new catch phrase that shows a frantic rush for suppliers to look bigger than they really are. Often this begins with a generally accepted phrase. That phrase is then attached to something else in the hopes that it will make the product or service appear well known and acceptable. In the end, it is unnecessary confusing…

By David
Grazed from The Montreal Gazette.  Author: Jeremy Morris.

Almost 10 years after launching the first (now seemingly brick-like) iPod, Apple has unveiled another version of the music player’s most successful descendant, the iPhone 4S. But while the tech press salivates over an even thinner, even speedier device to play Angry Birds on, the more significant news at Tuesday’s press conference was the official launch of Apple’s iCloud service (available Oct. 12)…

What’s at stake in the cloud?

By David
Grazed from The Hill.  Author: Gen. Michael Hayden.

The new federal strategy for implementing cloud-computing solutions is called “Cloud First”— and with good reason. We now systematically prefer cloud-computing solutions to those based on local servers and laptops. The allure of efficiencies, economies of scale, high-end services and — most importantly — reduced costs are almost irresistible.

But, as American governments at the federal, state and local levels rush headlong toward cloud computing, wouldn’t it be wise to pause and ask, “What’s at stake?”…

Building a Cloud Is Easy, Once You Have the Right Infrastructure

By David
Grazed from CTO Edge.  Author: Arthur Cole.

Cloud computing has come on so fast and so strong over the past year that it’s understandable that much of what we "know" about its architecture and capabilities is more myth than fact.

As some proponents would have you believe, CIOs need only sign on the dotted line to gain instant access to unlimited, low-cost resources…

Laying the Right Foundation for the Cloud

By David
Grazed from CTO Edge.  Author: Michael Vizard.

A lot of IT organizations are moving in fits and starts toward building their own private clouds largely through ongoing efforts to virtualize their server environments. But as IT organizations continue down that path, many of them are discovering that they’ve put too much emphasis on the server aspects of cloud computing when it turns out that modern storage systems are going to be at the root of any successful cloud computing deployment…
