SAP Korea, a major enterprise software developer, struck a partnership with LG CNS to accelerate the deployment of its in-house memory database platform. The partnership includes the establishment of the SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud Center (SAP HEC) in LG’s cloud data center in Busan, the nation’s biggest port city, according to a joint statement, Monday.

SAP and LG CNS said they aim to leverage in-memory computing capabilities to make processes that traditionally require batch processing available in real time. SAP Korea said it will help the LG Group affiliate expand its client base beyond the peninsula. "The SAP HEC Center will lead a key role in setting up infrastructure for cloud computing to be used with corporate clients and also provide needed services to existing and future clients," the statement said…

As the world increasingly relies on technology, the need for data storage has exploded. In fact, 90 percent of the data stored today was generated in the past two years. Cloud computing has become the norm, and corporations and private citizens regularly use virtual machines throughout their day.

What we often don’t consider is how that data collection and storage affects other aspects of our lives. We get excited about having access to huge quantities of on-demand media (think Spotify, or Netflix), but we rarely stop to think about where that information is stored. Apple, Cisco and AT&T all filed amicus curiae briefs on Friday supporting Microsoft in its appeal of a decision requiring it to hand over data about an Irish customer to U.S. law enforcement officials. Verizon filed an amicus brief on Microsoft’s behalf on Tuesday. The case highlights how the advent of cloud computing has technology companies overcoming their competitive differences in order to challenge troublesome data-protection laws.

In this case, U.S. magistrate judge James Francis IV decided that pursuant to the Stored Communication Act, Microsoft must provide law enforcement officials with the contents of an Irish customer’s email, which is stored on servers located in Dublin, Ireland. Microsoft and its peers argue the warrant defies both the Stored Communications Act and numerous international law constructs, including treaties the United States has in place with other countries — Ireland among them — regarding how to handle requests for data about each others’ citizens…

We’re at an interesting juncture in the cloud computing era. Amazon Web Services, which has had public cloud pretty much to itself since it launched the category in 2006, now faces an array of contenders. Yes they’re late to the party so yes they’re (much) smaller. But yes many have credible offerings, especially for companies that are bigger and older than startups and have at least a grasp of their workload size and variability.

And that means we’ll see more of this kind of thing – VMware’s response to the Amazon TCO calculator. (TCO stands for total cost of ownership.) One of VMware’s points is that Amazon’s basis for comparison is skewed against companies with on-premises deployment. Then it trots out its own TCO comparison showing (spoiler alert) that it costs less to run 100 virtual machines for 4 years in a VMware shop than with AWS…

OnLive, which offers cloud-based gaming and computing services company, has recently launched CloudLift Enterprise that will address the needs of graphics hungry applications.  CloudLift is a new cloud-based Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) which will let companies to stream "latency-sensitive Graphics Intensive Applications (GIAs)," like interactive demos, 3D programs and more via cloud to nearly any compatible device.

It would be fair to say that Windows 8 met with a rather lukewarm critical response. The latest Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) operating system was widely criticized for removing some of its most familiar features, most notably the ‘Start’ menu, and it was only a matter of time before Microsoft disowned it and released a replacement. Google Capital is investing in Chennai-based customer support software provider Freshdesk, along with existing investors Tiger Global and Accel Partners. Tiger Global led the $31 million (about Rs 184 crore) funding round.

This is the firm’s fourth round of funding. It previously raised $13 million (about Rs 77 crore) from Tiger and Accel.
