A rising number of companies are making use of Salesforce.com applications for their operations.

This is the suggestion of James Urquhart, a market strategist for cloud computing at Cisco Systems, who told the CNET website that the last couple of years have been highly successful ones for the company.

"Salesforce.com has moved from simply being a customer relationship management software-as-a-service vendor to being a true cloud platform contender," he said.

Mr Urquhart added that the arrival of the new enterprise social network and collaboration application Chatter has shown the company intends to turn itself into a "broad business platform".

He stated that he expects Salesforce.com’s chief executive officer Marc Benioff has plenty more exciting announcements to make in the near future.

Salesforce.com has a range of cloud-based applications to offer clients, including the Sales Cloud and the Service Cloud, as well as Force.com, which allows organisations to build and run business tools.
