IT security vendor SafeNet has acquired the privately-held maker of cloud authentication tools Cryptocard to strengthen its authentication-as-a-service offering.

SafeNet intends to integrate Cryptocard’s Backshield cloud platform, which lets firms continue to utilise legacy authentication servers and tokens to secure remote access to virtual desktop infrastructure or cloud-based platforms, with its Fully Trust Authentication service.

“As data continues to proliferate and move beyond traditional perimeters, customers are demanding solutions that protect and control data and identities across networks, mobile devices and to and from the cloud,” said Chris Fedde, SafeNet chief executive…

Many security vendors are eyeing the potentially lucrative shift to cloud-based platforms, amid reports that IT chiefs are holding fire on a transition to the cloud because of security concerns.

In related news, Dell has confirmed it is set to acquire firewall and cloud security vendor SonicWall.

Under the deal, SonicWall’s 950 staff are set to join Dell’s software group, expending its portfolio of security products.

“SonicWall gives Dell access to unique intellectual property resources and technology that position us well in fast growing parts of the software security business,” said John Swainson, president of Dell’s software group.

Neither Dell nor SafeNet disclosed the financial terms of their acquisitions.

The deals are just the latest in the on-going consolidation taking place in the security market, with compliance and management vendor Trustwave last week announcing it will acquire anti-malware and security research firm M86.
